Gregory J. Handshy, 66, of South Toms River, NJ, passed away on August 21, 2022 at Community Medical Center in Toms River. Gregory grew up in the Silverton section of Toms River and resided in South Toms River for over 30 years. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. In 1977, Gregory started his apprenticeship as a pipefitter with Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union 9 in Englishtown and continued his career for 35 years, retiring in 2012. Since 2019, Gregory proudly served as Mayor of South Toms River and was a former Councilman, serving from 2013-2015 and 2017-2018. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, Island Beach State Park and walks with his dog Cedrick.
He was predeceased by his parents Emery and Evelyn Handshy and his sister Beth. Surviving are his wife of 36 years Shirley; his sister Kathee Rankin and husband Frank; nieces and nephews Harmony, Evelyn, Faith, Frank Jr., Rhaya, Cameron and Darran.
A Memorial Gathering will be held on Sunday, September 11, 2022 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main St., Toms River. Cremation is private.
