

Educator and Family Man
John “Gene” Dugan died Sunday, January 13, 2013after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 82. Born in East Orange and raised in Montclair, he lived in Neptune and Seaville before moving to Galloway in 2004. He received a Bachelor and a Masters degree from Montclair State Teachers’ College and a Specialists degree from Rutgers University. He served as a pilot in the US Marine Corps attaining the rank of Captain. He taught at Pompton Lakes High School and Long Branch High School. He served as Vice Principal and Principal of Long Branch High School. He coached and was director of Adult School. He became Superintendent of Greater Egg Harbor Regional High Schools in 1977, working to build Absegami High School and end double sessions at Oakcrest High School. He retired in 1995.
He was predeceased by his parents, Edwin T. and Mary Ruth Cuddihy Dugan. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Ann Conroy Dugan, five daughters and one son: Patricia Christopher and her husband, Robert, Bayville; Kathleen Cremeans and her husband Gary, West Barnstable, MA; Tara Claudio and her husband David, Wall; Moira Dugan Meyreles, Kennett Square, PA; Erin Dugan, East Boston, MA; Timothy Dugan and his wife, Kimberly Curtiss, Baltimore, MD; thirteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Thomas Dugan, Camillus, NY, many nieces and nephews and dear friends.
Gene loved sports, especially football, basketball and baseball, music, reading, bird watching, history, swimming, silly songs and sayings, Scrabble, root beer and ice cream but mostly spending time with his family. He was a communicant of Church of the Assumption, Galloway.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013 at Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main Street, Toms River, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, 685 Hooper Ave, Toms River. Inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery will be privately held at a later date.
