John Alexander Huston, Jr., 97, of Island Heights and former resident of Maplewood, passed away peacefully at his home Sunday, March 8, 2015. Born in East Orange on February 19, 1918, he graduated from East Orange High School and Pace University. He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. John was an accountant for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, where he worked for almost 35 years until his retirement. He was a founder and board member for the Port Authority Retirement Retirees Association. John was a past member of the Maplewood Club and past Commodore and lifelong member of the Island Heights Yacht Club. He enjoyed tennis, sailing and social activities, especially dancing.
John was predeceased by his wife, Virginia; his sisters Betty and Helen; and his parents John and Sadie. Surviving are his daughters and sons-in-law, Candace and David Allen, Caryl and Michael Woulfe, and Jill and Joseph Burt; his son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Linda Huston; grandchildren Sarah, Joseph, Matthew, Chelsea, Kevin and Erin; and his cherished great grandchildren, Gabriela and Sophia.
A Memorial Service will be offered Saturday, March 21 at 11:30 a.m. at Island Heights United Methodist Church, 115 Ocean Ave., Island Heights. Private interment will take place at Brig. General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Popcorn Park Zoo in Forked River in John’s memory.
