

Joseph L. Bixler, of South Toms River passed away at age 98 on February 20, 2013 at home. Joseph was born in Clear Lake, South Dakota and was the son of the late James Bixler and Addie McCord. Joe came from pioneering families that literally settled the west. He was a graduate of Centerville H. S. and attended college in Yankton, SD. He served as a Boswain’s Mate in the United States Coast Guard during WWII. Upon returning from the war, he was employed as a letter carrier at the Toms River Post Office.
Joe was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Beachwood. He served on the Board of Education for the Toms River School District. He was a member of the Centerville, South Dakota Odd Fellows and American Legion Post No. 129 in Toms River. Joe was an avid bowler and bowled until he was 93. He was also an avid gardener.
Joe was predeceased by 6 brothers; Harry, Frank, James, Arthur, Carl and Clarence; and his sister Alice Heller. He is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years Louise (Sonder) Bixler of South Toms River; his daughter Sandra (Frederick) White; two grandsons Frederick (Martha) White and Joseph White; and four great grandsons Trey, Freddy, Owen and Alex all of Fulton, NY. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Cremation was private under the direction of Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home in Toms River. Condolences may be made by visiting www.andersonandcampbell.com.
