Kathie was a resident of Whiting, New Jersey and although she lived in Ocean County her entire life, she was a child of the world and traveled extensively. She began supporting the Department of Defense in 1968 and for most of her life, juggled a music career while raising two daughters. Her government career spanned 56 years and in that time she mentored many people and changed the lives of those around her. She was known for her wild stories about taking a sauna in Finland, riding to the top of the Schilthorn and being the opening act for Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Mickey Gilley. Kathie sought to find beauty in everyone and everything around her. She will be remembered as a trailblazer, a loving mother, and a doting grandmother.
Kathie is survived by her “two greatest accomplishments”, her daughters Jennifer Monninger (husband Scott) and Lacee Essex (husband Greg)– along with their children, Noah, Hannah and Maggie. She also leaves behind her beloved sister Joan Johnson and many treasured nieces, nephews and ‘work family’ members. Kathie was predeceased by her parents (Charity and William Applegate) and her siblings (William Jr, Jeannette and Jane).
Kathie’s family welcomes you to celebrate her life on November 3, 2024 at Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home (703 Main Street, Toms River) between 2-5pm. We encourage you to dress not for mourning, but in celebration of a life truly well-lived.
