Born to Charles and Jessie (Davis) Bruder in 1937, Ken was raised in Union Beach and then Matawan where he graduated high school in 1955. Ken forged lifelong friendships in Matawan through a shared love of the outdoors and football. As part of the Huskies football team Ken was co-captain his Junior and Senior years, named All-Shore defenseman of the year and inducted into the Matawan High School Football Hall of Fame.
After graduation Ken followed in his brother Carl’s footsteps and joined the United States Marine Corps. He loved his time in the Marines and spoke of it often. Later in life he took further pride in volunteering with the Philip K. Dorn Detachment of the Marine Corp League.
Ken graduated from East Stroudsburg University in 1963 and became a teacher in Tinton Falls where he met the love of his life, and fellow teacher, Dorothy Cartwright. Ken and Dotty were married in 1966 and celebrated 58 years of marriage.
Ken obtained his PhD in Entomology from Rutgers University and worked in mosquito control at Monmouth County and the State of New Jersey before his retirement in 2001.
Hunting and fishing factored prominently throughout Ken’s life as all can attest. Home projects were resigned to be performed to the few weeks between the end of deer season and the first pickerel bite of spring. This tradition continues through his sons.
Ken was a loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle and is survived by Dotty, his sons Steven (wife Leah) and Douglas (wife Kate), two grandchildren (Liliana and Tyler), and numerous nieces and nephews.
