Margaret Silverstein was my aunt and godmother.  More than that, she was a best friend, longtime co-worker, concert partner, and traveling companion.  Anyone who knew Marge was touched by her larger-than-life personality.  She was brash, brassy, and bold – a true Auntie Mame to my sister Jennifer and me. 

She was the one taking us to Walt Disney World year after year, the one waiting on line in the Toys R Us parking lot overnight to get Jen the new Cabbage Patch Doll, the one making sure I had tickets to see Barry Manilow and Neil Diamond, the one coming to the house on Christmas morning with garbage bags stuffed for us with every present imaginable.  She was the “cool aunt.”  As we got older, she remained there for us, and our parents, always. 

Hardly an evening went by over the years, no matter where I was, when I didn’t receive a late-night phone call or a text message from her.  In her final months, despite a debilitating hospitalization, she never lost her irascibility or her sense of humor.  

Marge cherished her family and her many, many friends.  She bravely battled a brain tumor for the last 15 years of her life.  Throughout that battle, she kept her courage.  We could all use a little of that courage now as we face life without this incredible, tough, funny, wacky, wicked, maddening, loving, giving, spirited, wonderful lady who meant so much to all of us.  But I know she is still with us, every time we conjure a memory, a laugh, or a smile.  

The world is a little quieter this morning.  

Margaret Silverstein was the definition of the “cool aunt”. She took me to my first New Kids on the Block concert, was with me on my first Disney trip, took me to my first Mets game and she most definitely took me to my first bar.  Just like she got me my first Cabbage Patch Doll, she made sure she was the one to get Ally her first American Girl Doll.  She loved my kids with all her heart, always calling to see how they were or to tell me about something she saw on tv that she thought they would like. 

There was never a dull moment with her. I remember going to see Bon Jovi in concert with her and she didn’t like our seats. So, in a way only she could, she found an usher and next thing I know we had new seats.   I could go on and on about all the fun times we shared.   Her personality was as big as her heart. She loved her son, her family and friends and she loved life. I am going to miss you, Auntie.  I love you.
