Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Mary Joan lived in Newark and Nutley, moving to Whiting in 2012.
She worked for Nutley Janette Shop in Nutley for over 10 years retiring in 1979.
Mary Joan was a member of the Ladies Elks in Metuchen and attended St. Michael's High School in Newark.
She sang in the choir at St. Thomas Church in Bloomfield.
Mary Joan was predeceased by her husband, Albert Carlisle.
She is survived by her son and his wife, Timothy William and Lisa Ann Carlisle; her step grandson, Robert LaGrutta; her sister, Theresa Sheehan; and her nieces and nephews, Lois, Donna, Beverly, Marcia, Regina, Patty, Alan, Tim and Douglas.
Viewing will be on Thursday, September 8, 2016, 6-8 pm at Horizon Funeral & Cremation Services, 1329 Route 37 W, Toms River, NJ.
Graveside service will be on Friday, September 9, 2016 at 11:00 at Glendale Cemetery, Bloomfield.
