Mary Jane Moloughney, 78, of Holiday City, Berkeley Township, NJ, passed peacefully after an extended struggle with Parkinson’s disease on Sunday, December 19, 2021 at her home with her husband at her side. The youngest of 5 children, Mary was born on August 3, 1943 in Meadville, PA to Ralph and Edna Choffel. She lived in Maywood, NJ for 37 years before settling in Holiday City in 2010.
A graduate of Meadville Senior High School, class of 1961, Mary worked as a telephone operator and information services provider for Bell, AT&T, and Verizon in Jersey City and Rochelle Park, NJ, achieving recognition for her years of service before retiring after 30 years. Throughout her life she took pleasure in social activities, including bowling, bocce, shuffleboard, darts, and bingo. She always enjoyed her Friday night card group or a day at the slots. With a smile and a signature laugh, Mary enlivened family gatherings with a rousing game of dominoes, an intense puzzle building session, or a raucous roller coaster ride.
Mary will be remembered as a compassionate and singular person. Her adventurous spirit was the source of many great memories to be retold by those who knew her.
She embraced her Catholic faith, instilling the virtues of compassion, charity, and care for the less fortunate in her children. She spent much of her time giving back to the community, volunteering for many years as a bingo worker at Our Lady Queen of Peace parish in Maywood, and raising funds for the local hospital in Holiday City with the Holly Twigs. She was a proud member of Verizon Pioneers, a volunteer service organization, throughout her career.
Mary was preceded in death by her loving parents, an infant brother Leonard Lewis, her sisters Donna Choffeland Anna Mae Phares, and her brother Ralph Choffel. She is survived by her loving husband, partner, and best friend of 50 years, Joseph Michael Moloughney, a former USAF Staff Sergeant. She was the patient and caring mother of Joseph (Jr.) and his wife Debra (Hebert); Deneen and her husband Richard Williams; and Patrick and his husband Nathan Sivitz. She was the proud and adored Grammy of Kendall, Brady, Sydney, and Devin. She is fondly remembered as a beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive family and friends at Horizon Funeral Home, 1329 Route 37 West, Toms River, NJ on Monday December 27, 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Mary’s funeral mass will be celebrated at Saint Maximilian Kolbe Church in Toms River on Tuesday December 28th at 12pm, with interment to follow at Brigadier General William C.
