Richard “Richie” P. Applegate, 72, of South Toms River, passed away on June 3, 2021 at Community Medical Center in Toms River. Born in Lakewood, Richie was a longtime resident of South Toms River. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Richie worked for the Sanitation Department for the Borough of South Toms River for over 30 years before his retirement. He was also a former councilman for the Borough of South Toms River. Richie was a great Handyman. When you needed something fixed in the home he was there to help. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents Carmon and Dorothy Applegate and brothers Thomas and Carmon. Surviving are his sister Diane Applegate and son Marc Cook; his nieces and nephews Lisa, Kim, Julie, Dennis, Richie and Brian; and many loving grandnieces and grandnephews.

A Memorial Gathering will be held on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 from 4 to 6 p.m., with a service at 5:30 p.m. at Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main St., Toms River. Cremation will be private.
