Richard (Dick) Hernon, 72 of Toms River died Wednesday March 20th peacefully at home. He was born in Staten Island, NY and resided in Toms River since 1962. He graduated from Rutgers University and NJIT with a masters degree in civil engineering. He served as a company commander in the Army Corps of Engineers. Dick worked at NJ DOT until he became a County Engineer for Hudson County.
In 1980, he joined NJ Transit Rail as Chief Engineer of Structures and later became Deputy Director of Engineering for NJ Rail Operations. In 1988, he moved to the Hudson Bergen Light Rail Project as Director of Engineering. He guided the two billion dollar project to its first phase of completion. He retired from Transit and joined T & M Associates as Chief Engineer. Dick was an active member of St. Joseph's Church in Toms River. Dick will be remembered for his strength during his long battle with prostate cancer, but most of all for his love of family, his kindness and generosity. He enjoyed his trips to Disney and being with his two grandchildren Max and Jack. He will be sadly missed but never forgotten. Dick was predeceased by his parents Frank and Mary Hernon and his first wife Susan Hartnett Hernon. He is survived by his loving wife Jane (Murphy) Hernon, his son Robert Nagel and his wife Melissa of Point Pleasant Beach, his daughter Elizabeth Hernon and sons Richard Hernon Jr. and Patrick Hernon of Toms River, his two grandsons Max and Jack Nagel, his sister Mary Jane Hummers and her husband Joe, and many nieces and nephews who loved him.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 24, 2013, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main St. Toms River. A funeral mass will be held on Monday at 1:00 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, 685 Hooper Ave, Toms River. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Toms River.
