

Richard Hoyt Jenkins, age 80, of Beachwood, NJ, passed away on Sunday, April 1st, 2012 at home. He was born to Percy Jenkins and the former Madeleine Child of Greenwich, CT, on April 5th, 1931, in Clinton Massachusetts. Richard lived in Livingston and Summit, NJ, before moving to Beachwood in 1980.
Richard was predeceased by his beloved wife of 42 years, Barbara Grenke Jenkins; his grandson Matthew Jenkins; and his brother Peter Jenkins. He is survived by his son Richard Jenkins II and his wife Kathleen of Bow, NH; his daughter Barbara and her husband Steve Sablack of Beachwood, NJ; his daughter Jennifer and her husband Jim Schultz of Shamong, NJ; his daughter Cynthia Braswell of NC; his brother Robert Jenkins of St. Petersburg, FL; and his companion Gina Kaminski. He is the much loved Pop-Pop to: Stephen Sablack, Madeleine Sablack, Richard Jenkins III, Robert Jenkins, Kathleen Jenkins, and McKenna Schultz.
Richard was a Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corp. He was an honorably discharged Veteran of the Korean War (1951-1954) and was awarded the Korean Service Medal/3*, the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of the Toms River Marine Corp League and a Lifetime Member of the VFW. Richard attended Princeton University. He was employed in the Wastewater field and involved in water pollution control since 1958.He was Chief Operator and Superintendent for the Township of Livingston, NJ, for 22 years. He was Superintendent at Western Monmouth Utilities Authority, Manalapan, NJ, for 9 years. He worked at Pumping Services, Inc, Middlesex, NJ, for one year. He was Superintendent at Bayshore Regional Sewage Authority for 17 years, retiring in 2008, after 50 years in the industry. He earned the top licenses issued by the NJDEP in the field of wastewater treatment, including S-4, and C-4. Richard was an active member of the NJ Water Environment Association, serving on their Conference Committee, Seminar and Technology Transfer Committee and was Chief of Hospitality. In 2004, Richard received the Monmouth County "Cabinet of Honor" Award for his decades-long dedication to protecting the water quality of Monmouth County. He has received numerous awards and honors in the water environment field, including the Water Environment Federation's Arthur Sidney Bedell Award for extraordinary personal service to the NJWEA, the William D. Hatfield Award for his years of outstanding service, the T. William Cleveland Award for providing extraordinary service to the NJWEA, the NJWEA's Harry Croft Award, and the Service Award. In May 2012, the NJWEA will induct him into the Hall of Fame. In 2011, the New Jersey Water Environment Association established the Richard Jenkins Scholarship for Vocational and Technical Education. The Scholarship is awarded annually to deserving students.
