Salvatore “Sal” Platia, 72, passed away on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 surrounded lovingly by his family. Sal was born on March 15, 1951 in Queens, NY to Charlie and Mary Platia. As their one-and-only, Sal was the pride and joy of the Platia family. Though Sal was an only child, you wouldn’t know it by the bonds he shared with his cousins and many close friends who become his chosen family.
After his young days of mischief with his pals in Astoria, Sal entered Wall Street where he became a successful stock trader. He met his wife, Maureen, at work and they married in 1978. After welcoming their two daughters, Stephanie and Toni-Ann, they moved out of New York City to settle in New Jersey. They welcomed their third child, Charlie, several years later and built their life together in Jackson Township.
When not hard at work, Sal loved opening his home to his family and friends, where he’d share a traditional Italian meal, a good bottle of wine, an oldie on his juke box, and a spirited game of Pinochle. Sal was a generous entertainer, a loyal friend, a street-smart rulebreaker, and a real wise guy. But most of all, Sal was a genuine family man. Leading by example, he taught his children to be disciplined, cherish each other, and love unconditionally. He raised them wanting for nothing, but leave them today wishing they had more time. They look forward to passing these values on to Sal’s new grandson, Jameson, son of Stephanie and Steve Zepp, who brings light to all of their lives during these difficult times.
Services will be held at Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home on Saturday, December 16th from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 and on Sunday, December 17th from 2:00-6:00. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, December 18th at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 685 Hooper Ave, Toms River. Entombment will follow at Mary Queen of Peace Mausoleum, 2351 Massachusetts Ave., Toms River, located at St. Mary of the Lake Cemetery and Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in memory of Sal to Team Gleason or the Joan Dancy Foundation, each of which provided critical equipment and care services that helped Sal and his family during his illness.
