January 16, 1927 – June 22, 2025
Virginia Guariglia, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and proud ArmenianAmerican, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2025, at the age of 98. Born on January 16, 1927, in Brooklyn, New York, Virginia was the daughter of Stephen and Rose Keshishian. Her mother, Rose, was a survivor of the 1915 Armenian Genocide—a legacy that deeply shaped Virginia’s pride in her heritage and her enduring commitment to remembrance and cultural identity. An exceptional student with a joyful spirit, Virginia loved tap dancing and singing. She had a quick wit and a remarkable sense of humor—traits that lit up every room she entered. In post–World War II Brooklyn, she met the love of her life, James Guariglia. The two married and shared 58 wonderful years together, living in Brooklyn, Staten Island, and eventually settling in Toms River, New Jersey. Virginia worked for many years as an international switchboard operator for Bell Telephone Company. Later, she was proud to work at the World Trade Center, where she brought her warmth and work ethic to everything she did. In Toms River, Virginia and James founded the area’s first Armenian-American club, where she served as president for many years. She was instrumental in organizing the first Armenian flag raising ceremony at the county seat—an event that stood as a testament to her lifelong devotion to cultural recognition of her Armenian heritage. After James’ passing in 2006, Virginia continued her legacy of leadership by founding the first Red Hat chapter referred to as the “Juliettes” in her Holiday City community, where she built lasting friendships and brought joy to many. Virginia was also a wonderful cook, known for preparing both Armenian and Italian meals for her family and friends. She loved to entertain, and her home was often filled with laughter, delicious food, and the warmth of her generous spirit. She is survived by her two sons, Dr. James Guariglia and Dr. Mark Guariglia; their wives, Joycee and Maria; her cherished granddaughter, Dana Baranello, her husband John, their two beautiful daughters Gemma Joycee and Giana James and her loving grandson Nicholas Guariglia. Virginia spent her final years at Complete Care Shorrock Gardens, where she was lovingly cared for by a devoted staff. Her family extends heartfelt thanks to the entire Shorrock team, whom Virginia affectionately called her “honeybunnies.” Special gratitude also goes to the hospice team for their gentle support and care in her final days. Virginia’s life was one of deep faith, grace, strength, laughter, and vibrant devotion to her family and heritage. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, July 1, 2025 at 11:30 am at St. Joseph's Church, 685 Hooper Ave. Toms River. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Toms River.
