AGE: 85 TOMS RIVER
Wallace A. "Gub" Polhemus, 85, of Toms River, passed away peacefully Sunday, Aug. 8, 2010, at home, surrounded by his loving family. Known to many as "Gub", he was born in Toms River and was a lifelong resident and enjoyed wintering for the past 26 years in Stuart, Fla. He was a graduate of "Old" Toms River High School, Class of 1942, and was honored and proudly inducted into the Toms River Schools Hall of Fame in 2002. In 1946, he began his accomplished funeral career with Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home in Toms River. He attended and graduated from Eckels College of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia Pa., and received his License in 1950. He owned and operated Anderson & Campbell Funeral Homes until his retirement. As a funeral director he valued principles. He was empathic and his compassionate nature would always shine through, showing his warmth and trusting manner to all the families he served. Gub served as Ocean County Coroner from 1962 to 1971. He was Funeral Director Emeritus of Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home Inc., and was a member of N.J. State Funeral Directors Association; Monmouth-Ocean Funeral Directors Association; National Funeral Directors Association. As a man of God, Gub was a faithful member of the Presbyterian Church of Toms River for over 60 years, and served as a Deacon. Gub was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 204th Port Co., 10th Army Corps in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. He was also a member of American Legion Post 129 in Toms River. He was a member and past president of Toms River Kiwanis Club, life member of Lodge #1875 B.P.O.E. of Toms River; The National Republican Senatorial Committee in 1994; National Rifle Association. He was also a licensed pilot and was a member of Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association, and the Flying Funeral Directors of America. An avid sports fan, he especially enjoyed the Philadelphia Eagles and Toms River South Football. Gub was a person who genuinely understood and cared for others, he was a wonderful husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, and leaves behind a legacy of cherished memories that will live forever.
He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph F. and Jessie Polhemus; and his brother, John Franklin Polhemus. Surviving are his beloved wife of 60 years, Patricia Campbell Polhemus; four devoted sons, Wallace T. Polhemus and his wife Laurel of Beachwood, John C. Polhemus and his wife Carla of Toms River, Mark Douglas Polhemus and his wife Debra of Toms River, and Richard M. Polhemus and his wife Dianne of Pine Beach; two loving daughters, Beth Magee and her husband Gary of Toms River, and Patricia Hodulich of Toms River; 14 cherished grandchildren, Heather, T.J., Patrick, Kary, Laura, Jonathan, David, Lauren, Matthew, Christopher, Amanda, Meghan, Emily and Allison; and three adored great-grandchildren, Kaylyn, Morgan and Owen.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12 at Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main St., Toms River. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 13 at the Presbyterian Church of Toms River. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Toms River.
