Werner Reichardt, 92, of Toms River, NJ, died peacefully Friday, February 13, 2015, at home, surrounded by members of his loving family. Werner was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States with his parents when he was less than a year old. He was raised in Wallington, NJ and attended East Rutherford High School. Werner served in the U.S. Army during World War II, including as a member of the 491st Armored Artillery Battalion of the 11th Armored Division during the Battle of the Bulge. After leaving the service, Werner married Angelina Meli on December 8, 1946. They lived for many years in Wayne, NJ and moved to Toms River in 1965. Werner was a colorist at Toms River Chemical Company for 20 years before retiring in 1985.
Werner was a man of many interests and talents. He loved to garden and to build things, including model airplanes, model railroad layouts and projects around his home. He was also a skilled photographer. Werner was an avid student of science, history, world events, philosophy, genetics, and many other subjects. He loved to discuss and debate his views on these subjects and other “big ideas” with anyone who would listen and respond. He also was a great storyteller and liked to make people laugh.
Werner was very dedicated to his family and to his wife Angie, with whom he celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary before she passed away in January 2009. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends and neighbors. Surviving are his son, Glenn, and his wife JoAnn Zuercher of Bethesda, MD; his daughter, Lorraine Haine, and her husband Walter of Toms River; six grandchildren: Alyssa, Andrew, Joanna, Joe and his wife Meghan, Rachel and her husband Mario, Sarah and her husband Mike; and his great granddaughter, Angelina.
Werner’s family would like to express its heartfelt gratitude to Pattie Pillari and Helena Timkova for their kindness to Werner in recent years and to the staff of Barnabas Health/Van Dyke Hospice, particularly Marian Estabrook, for the excellent care given to Werner at the end of his life.
