Assunta's daughter Francesca recently informed me of her recent passing.  In looking at the photo gallery I was reminded of her as a faithful parishioner of St. Alphonsus Church during my years there.  I was so blessed to be stationed there and think back often with great fondness of the wonderful people I was privileged to know.  I offered Mass this morning for Assunta's and her husband's repose. I and my family are saddened to hear of your mom's passing.  She was a joy to meet, always with a smile and always making sure we had enough to eat when we visited with her. Dearest Mom,
Words cannot describe how so alone I feel without you.  You were so much a part of my life and the emptiness of not seeing or hearing your sweet voice is undescribable. The only time I find peace is back home at Tyrrel; it is there that I can feel your warmth and love.  Every night before I sleep, I utter the words we spoke to each other every weekend before going to bed. "sonno d'oro, sonno d'argento", "bouna notte mamma, ti amo" and you would always respond "bouna notte cara figlia mia, ti amo d'pui". I hold on to all the beautiful memories we all shared as a family and I ask you to please give me courage and strength to strive forward in my own journey.  Walk beside me forever, mom and never let me fall.

To my dearest mom,

there are no words to express how very blessed I was to have such a wonderful angel as you for my mother. You raised us children with patience, kindness and unconditional love. You never, ever complained, even when I knew you were exhausted to the bones. You often went without to ensure we were clothed,fed, and content.You were the very best wife & mother to dad and us children. I have so many fond memories of you that I will forever cherish with me. However, the one that I will always remember is your homemade cake you would make for us on our birthdays. Although times were hard, you always made sure we had a party. To this day I can still taste your wonderful, homemade cake (with red cherries on top) made with your labour of love and dignity. Thank you mom for always making each occasion so special to us. In the last years as Ida, Milva, and I took care of you & dad, people would often comment how lucky you both were to have three caring daughters look after you. Little did they know, that we were indeed the lucky ones. When God chooses guardians for his children, we siblings were so blessed that he chose Pasquale & Assunta Toscano as our beloved parents. You were both hard working, honest, respectful and loving people; your home was always open to everyone and you gave all you had (even if it was your last piece of bread). I thank you for instilling in me these values and I will promise to carry on all you have taught me through my children; may this beautiful legacy be carried on from generation to generation. I take great comfort mom, in knowing you have been re-united with dad,Frank, and all our beloved relatives.May you watch over us all with your goodness, faith, and warm kindness. The gates of heaven have opened and embraced the most wonderful Angel of all. How very blessed the children in Heaven are to have the most caring, patient, and loving mother/grandmother look after them. Mom, you are finally with your Angels of chilren!

Assunta Toscano Eulogy- Written and Recited at Funeral Mass by Maria Baldari - Niece 

Quando penso alla Zia Assunta vengono a mente tre parole che fifletlano il modo in cui lei la vissuto la sua vita.  Le tre parole sono FEDE, FAMIGLIA, e UMILTA.  Sono tre feli uniti un solo felo con cui la zia ha costruito la sua vita.  Fede, famiglia, e umilta.  Uno no puo esustere senza l'altro.  

I miei primi ricordi della cara zia rigalgano quando avevo 5 o 6 anni.  La Domenica s'andava a trovare la nonna Teresa- ma prima, tante volte s'andava a visitare la bisnonna Marianna.  Dov'era la zia? Era alla davanti la padella a preparare il pranzo della Domenica Italiana.  Cosa faceva per noi? Correva casa, casa per prederci lei dolci o preparava un po di limonata fresca.  A quei tempi, ricordo la zia Pina Letteri con lo zio Rocco che abitavano li.  Era una casa piena di vita e attivita - di due famiglie che crescevano assieme. 

Questa enrgia dentro la casa non si era fermata mai.  Anche doppo Zio Rocco mori, zia sempre accoglieva ospiti - tutti i parenti appogiavano da lei - lo Zio Vincenzo, la sorella Mela e tutti i parenti degli Stati Uniti.  Sua casa non era un gran castello.  Era una residenza modesta ma ben mantenuta - polita ed ogni cosa al suo posto.  I parenti non cercavano il lusso.  Ritornavano per la sincera ed affetuosa generosita della zia. Non gli mancava niente.  Nutriva a tutti, senza giudizi facendo la volanta di Gesu. 

Lei non era soltanto una moglie, madre, zia, o sorella - era un'amica di tutti.  Con le sue sorelle e fratelli c'era sempre un forte lagame, anche se lontano a Vancouver dove stava la Zia Rosina. sempre comportandosi con oltimo rispetto e gentilezza.  Quest' e educazione imparata da bambina a casa sua a Junchi.  Con le sorelle di Toronto , Teresa, Pina e Palma si sbrigavano le facende assieme.  Facevano la spesa a St.Clair, andavano al cimitero e spesso discutevano gli avrenti del consulato.  Quando non si vedevano si chiamavano parlando del  piu e del meno e dalla loro salute. 

Tutta la vita, zia ha accettato le sue croci come un vero discepoto.  Scrive in una cartolina di Natale "malgrado i nostri dispiaceri, le nostre preoccupazione, le nostre stachezze, abbiamo Fiducia in Dio che non ci abbondonera mai".  

Nella sua rissurezione sara unita certo con tutta la sua famiglia - non tutti anziani purtroppo - anche tanti giovani l'accogleranno il primo sicuramente suo figlio Francesco.  Forse anche addesso lei potra vedere di nuovo il suo paese Junchi.  Concludo con due parle della sua poesia.

"Paese dove si nasce e come il primo amore, che non si scorda mai.  Questa e la verita.  Addio paese mio che ti abbiamo lasciato e siamo andati via.  Ma ti ricordiamo con tanta nostalgia".

Assunta Toscano's Eulogy 

I am honored to be standing here today in the presence of the Lord to pay tribute to my grandmother Assunta Toscano.  My grandmother was born in Reggio Calabria, Italy on November 24, 1934 and was the second youngest child of nine children to Guiseppe and Marianna Letteri. They were a very close knit family and were highly respected in the town of Unki. As a child my grandmother very much enjoyed going to school, loved to recite and write poems and looked forward to going to church every Sunday morning with her family. 

When my grandmother settled in Canada, she took with her, her values and morals and applied them to her role as wife and mother. My grandmother was the most humble, kind, and loving person we will ever know. She had an extraordinary gift of generosity and always, always thought of others before herself. Her home was constantly open to family, friends, and neighbors. One never left her house without a token of her love.  She had a heart of gold and forever found the good in others. My grandmother took great pleasure in writing cards for all occasions and never forgot a birthday, anniversary or special event.

She had a passion for cooking and baking, especially her homemade canollis. My grandmother made the best chicken soup ever, with her famous little homemade meatballs. There was nothing more my grandmother enjoyed, than hosting the family gatherings on Christmas and New Years Eve. My mother often tells me with great fondness how all her cousins, Aunts, and Uncles would gather together in my nonna's basement and rejoice with the simple things in life of love, laughter, and family. 

My grandmother devoted 25 years of caring for her mother, Marianna with patience, respect, and love. She was blessed to have wonderful caring neighbors, especially her best friend of 43 years, Rosa Giannone. They were as close as two sisters could be. One of the most important things in her life was her faith in God. She was greatly dedicated to St. Alphonsus church and instilled in her children the importance of the Catholic faith. 

Her daughters Ida, Milva, and Josie are humbly honored to have been blessed with such a loving mother. My grandmother sacrificed her entire life to her husband, children, and grandchildren .She often went without, in order to give to her children. She extremely loved my grandfather and had the patience of a saint. Her daughters take great pride in following in their mother's values and teachings. In my grandmother's last ten years, she battled Parkinson's  disease and rarely ever complained as the disease slowly crippled her body. She was fortunate to have a special care giver for the last 2 years of her life. Her daughters would like to send their sincere thanks and gratitude to Joy, for all her hard work and dedication to my grandparents. My nonna leaves behind her three daughters, 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. In closing, her daughters would like to thank each and every one of you for all your kindness and support. A very special thank-you to Father Jim and St. Alphonsus Church.  I know my grandmother has touched each and every one of you in a special  way  and may her memories remain close to your hearts,

My grandmother will be sadly missed, but we take great comfort in knowing that she is finally re-united with her beloved son and husband. Let's all leave a window open in our hearts,  for the day,  when  the time will come to say hello again.

Dear beloved cousins in Canada. 

Heartfelt sympathy from Brooklyn. We are all saddened by the passing of your beloved mother and sister. I was telling your cousin the other night that though I hadn't seen her so many times in my life, she was a constant, though distant, presence in all of our lives here. 

She was a beautiful, loving woman who left an impact on us even from afar. She was a special person who extended her love to all of those around her. Her loving kindness and hospitality when I visited many years ago is still fresh in my mind. 

She was the matriarch of your family there after Zia Marianna passed away. Her home was a welcoming one to all of us here in the States when we visited. 

A void is felt in our hearts yet we are comforted to know that she is no longer in pain and reunited with Pasqualino, Zia Marianna, my grandparents, my aunts and uncles, our cousins Lauretta and Robert, and all those no longer with us. 

I wish her peace. May you all be comforted to know she was so loved and has left a beautiful legacy in all of you.

Earth lost a wonderful Zia.
