Nelson Mandela
Bairu Sium was born in Eritrea, in the horn of Africa. Having migrated in 1976, Bairu was one of the earliest Eritreans to settle in Toronto.
While serving as a secondary school teacher for 29 years, Bairu became a community activist, mentor and friend to many, both inside and outside of the classroom. He tirelessly pursued his lifelong passion for education, continuing his teaching career in Tanzania after retirement from the Toronto Board of Education.
As a loving father, committed friend, and community educator, Bairu Sium will be loved and missed by many.
