April 29, 1962 – June 23, 2017
Carmen Genovese died peacefully in Washington, DC, on Friday, June 23. Carm’s wife of 19 years, Jo Bradley, his friend Matt Eliot, his sister Marilyn Brown, and his brother Frank Genovese were with him in his final hours. Carmen’s final months were spent in a valiant fight against cancer. Carm grew up in Barrie, Ontario, and attended St. Mary’s and Barrie North Collegiate before earning his HBA in 1986 from the Ivey Business School at the University of Western Ontario. He started his career at Pizzeria Italia in Barrie before changing direction to work in finance at Deloitte & Touche in Toronto, earning his Canadian CA. At Deloittes he developed what would become a life-long love of travel, with long term assignments in the Cayman Islands and London, in addition to shorter assignments throughout Asia. In 1998, on his way home from Bangkok, Carm passed the time answering a job ad at the back of the Economist magazine, which led to his being quickly recruited by the World Bank Group in Washington, DC. He soon moved to the Group’s International Finance Corporation, which took Carmen and Jo on an adventure of living in Hong Kong, Bangkok and Istanbul, before returning to Washington in 2014. In addition to Jo, Carmen is survived by his parents Eugenio and Giuseppina Genovese, and his siblings JoAnne, Angelina, Frank (Rachel) and Marilyn (Patrick) Brown. He was a devoted uncle to his nieces and nephews and a beloved cousin and nephew to many in Canada, Italy, and the U.S. Carmen also leaves behind a large network of friends around the globe, who cherished him for his fine character, his big heart, his selflessness, his gracious hospitality, and most of all for a rich and distinctive laugh which he shared generously. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 29 from 7-9PM at Trull Funeral Home, 2704 Yonge Street, Toronto, Ontario. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Parish, 24 Cheritan Avenue, Toronto, on Friday, June 30 at 11AM, with burial to follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, 305 Erskine Avenue, Toronto. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Carmen may be directed to Kids Help Phone (Canada), http://kidshelpphone.ca, or to Team Andra, in support of the Pancreatic Cancer Network (USA), http://support.pancan.org/goto/teamandra
