From Cancer to Covid, the word strong is an understatement. Nonno was a fighter, he fought until the very end. Our family will forever be grateful for the time we’ve spent together. Thank you for guiding us in the right direction. The sacrifices you made were unimaginable, working countless hours to provide a better life for your family.  From months of being in a hospital bed, struggling to breathe, in unbearable pain, Nonno showed resilience and  never gave up. As grandchildren, we have the responsibility to continue your legacy. Family was of great importance to Nonno.  A man who constantly cared for our well-being, whenever we drove home from Nonna’s house or went out with our friends. Nonno always said, "Stai attento.” Our heart aches with the thought of you not being here.  

Zio Luigi and I had been cutting the grass ever since Nonno got sick.  As I finished, he always insisted for me to sit with him and have a beer, Nonno enjoyed the company. Observing the cars passing by, he said to me: “Luca, Nonno é finite”, I responded: “Nonno you’re tough as nails, and you will fight through this.” 

 I had visited Nonno in the hospital; I walked into the room and said: “Oo Nonno.” With his eyes wide open and a smile on his face he responded: “Lucaaa.” After talking about school, work and the girls. My nonno looked at me and paused. In Italian, he said: “Luca, when are you going to get married.” I laughed and said: “Nonno I don’t know, maybe another 8-10 years.” Nonno said, “Lucaa, Nonno non sta bene. I want you to remember, when I am not here, the busta will be from me and Nonna.” Tears running down my face I responded: “Nonno I don’t want no busta, I want you and Nonna both there on my wedding day.” As Nonno’s grandchildren grow older, there will come a day when we all get married. And although Nonno will not be there with us physically, I guarantee he will be watching over us. This was our Nonno, a generous and unselfish man. Nonno, we love and miss you dearly.  

Nonno was a strong, stubborn, and a very generous man. He was so selfless, He did everything he could for anyone, regardless of who they were. He was a prideful man, and very hardworking. He woke up every morning, and went to work to provide for his family. He came home, did some work in the garden, fed the chickens and rabbits and then went inside to his family. He never complained about how much he worked or how tired he was. He knew he had to do something, and he did it. Simple as that.

 I can’t even begin to explain how generous my Nonno was. There was this time, a few years back, I came by my grandparents’ house, to visit after school, and I remember coming down the stairs and I saw my grandfather talking, and laughing to this stranger that I’ve never seen before. Well I said hi, went into the kitchen and asked my grandmother who he was, and she turned to me and said: “Nonno saw this man at the bus stop, and thought he looked thirsty so he invited him in to have an espresso.”  This is only one of the many stories I have about my grandfather’s generosity. I aspire to be just like him. My Nonno made the world a better place.

I mentioned before how my Nonno was a very strong and stubborn man and he showed that every day, since he was diagnosed with lung cancer, he fought every single day. I think back, how much my Nonno had suffered this past year, and I often find myself questioning why God took my Nonno from us. I’ve come up with a conclusion. When we enter a garden, which flowers do we pick, the most beautiful ones I believe God does the same thing with people. He picks the most beautiful souls. That’s why He picked my Nonno. 

I have a few words for my Nonno, thank you for showing me how to be happy, for teaching me how to love generously. Thank you for showing me how to be strong, and not give up. Ti amo tanto nonno, grazie per tutti, fino a quando ci incontriamo di nuovo. Arrivedderci in cielo. And like you use to say to me, “Fa Lo Bravo.”

Without fail... Nonno, you brought a smile to everyone’s face. You were a friend of the world. No matter where you were (family gatherings or the fruit market parking lot) you’d strike up a conversation with someone, invite them into your home and have them laughing. Nonno really touched the lives of those he met. I know he’s touched mine in a way that will never be forgotten. 

There was nothing more important to Nonno than his family. His family meant everything to him, always did, even when he got sick.  Nonno was a fighter, no matter how hard life got, no matter how sick he felt, us grandkids never heard him once complain.

As long as I could remember, the garden was his life. He was happy to get up every morning and spend the day tending to his mini-farm or drinking one to many glasses of his homemade vino. What always stood out to me was how much happier he was sharing the fruits of his labour with everyone around. Every time I went to Nonno’s house I never left empty handed or hungry; a ginger ale, five dollar bill, random candies from his pocket, I always had something to remember him after my visit. 

Although Nonno isn’t physically with us anymore, his spirit will always live on. In fact, all you have to do is be around his children and grandchildren. You can see and feel nonno everywhere. In Zia Franca’s selflessness, Zia Lina’s resilience, my father’s charisma and even Zia Maria’s determination.  

I don’t think words can describe how fortunate I am to have had a role model like you Nonno. Thank you for showing me how to be a hard worker, a good friend and most importantly thank you for showing me the importance of family. The hole in our hearts will be depicted by the empty spot at the head of the table every birthday, Easter and Christmas. You simply lit up the room no matter how you were feeling. We are blessed to have been able to share our lives with you and the memories we share will be held on to for eternity.

My sincerest condolences to the entire family during this difficult time.

Carmine was a dear friend of my parents.  I have many memories of Carmine helping my father with work projects. Safety was not always their concern, but good times were always had.

As time passes, fond memories help us deal with the loss of our loved ones.  Continue to share these memories so that younger generations will know what a great man Carmine was.

I wanted to share a very special memory about my dad, Carmine Di Raimo. 

Every morning I would drive by my parents house to bring my son Damian to school. And every morning, rain or shine and even through the cold bitter winters, my dad would wait for us to pass by so he could just see him and wave hello. It was those little things that made me realize how blessed we were to have such a great person in our lives.

God called Carmine peacefully on Monday, November 16, 2020 at the age of 81. He will be forever missed by his loving wife, Michelina. Cherished by his dear children, Franca (Santo Vetere), Pasqualina (Dino Romano), Luigi (Rosanna Di Raimo), and Maria (Milan Markovic). May he be the guardian angel to his grandchildren Maria, Marcus, Lucas, Michelle, Connie, Carmine, and Damian. He will be missed dearly in the hearts of his family, brothers, brother in-laws, sister in-laws, relatives and many friends.
If so desired, donations in memory of Carmine, may be sent to the Canadian Cancer Society.
