Dorothy Whitney passed away April 24, 2017 in Toronto aged 83, after a protracted battle with cancer. She leaves behind her husband, Victor Smith; daughters, Elizabeth and Joanne; grandchildren, Raphael and Carmen; brother Tom, and sisters Eileen, Carol and Cathy.
Born in Toronto in 1934, Dorothy was an independent-minded professional, and achieved success in both the private and public sectors. Her talent for administration earned her commendations for excellence in public service.
Given six months to live in 2001, Dorothy shrugged off her prognosis, and proceeded to live for a further sixteen years. Independent, brave, generous, and strong willed, those years were lived to their fullest. Dorothy involved herself in the lives of her children, of her young grandchildren, and as an active member of the community. She frequently traveled with her husband Victor. She volunteered for St. Margaret's Hospital. And well into her 70s, Dorothy--notorious for her ten-mile “strolls”--could walk the legs off a donkey.
She was predeceased by her parents, Thomas Whitney and Eileen Whitney (Mullens), by Joseph Mastrotucci (spouse), and by her brothers John, James, and Thomas. She will be missed by her numerous nieces and nephews, and the many people she touched through her numerous volunteer activities.
Dorothy requested to be cremated. Her ashes will be interred at Highland Memory Gardens .
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kensington Hospice, where Dorothy lived her final few days and received an exceptional level of quality personal care and attention.
