Dear Susan:  I am sure you will not remember me but I worked with Doug at Canadian General, first when they were in the old building in downtown Toronto and later when they moved out to Scarborough.  To say that Doug was the very, very best that this business had to offer would be an understatement.  The strange thing was, the day before I found out that Doug was so sick, I had met up with another person who worked with him and we were going to try to get in touch.  He was a gentleman and a gentle man and he will be missed.

Susan and the rest of the family, Doug made an impact on everyone he touched in the Insurance Industry.  We all miss him but his contagious spirit lives on.

I just heard the news about Doug and wanted to express my sympathy--Doug and I worked together many years ago at the Co-operators and he always could make me laugh no matter what.  He was such a free spirit and will be missed.

Dear Susan, Please accept our condolences for your loss. Laurel and I were very shocked to hear that Doug was in hospital, but at least we got to visit Doug one last time. It’s still so unreal. We are very, very saddened by his passing and we will both miss him terribly. He had the best sense of humor ever, and he was truly a very special and unique person. I have never met his equal. I always felt Doug and I had a special connection based on many years of playing on the same hockey teams in our formative years in Owen Sound. We met Doug through mutual friends not too long ago.Since that time, his colourful personality and appearance became a welcome addition to our lives as Cabbagetown neighbours. When he learned of our recent move to Port Hope,he made every effort to put us in touch with friends who already live here.

My condolences. Doug was the greatest and we will miss him. I remember him banging out a tune till his fingers bled and still he'd keep going. Loved his music and his warmth.

I offer sincere condolences.  I worked with Doug at Co-operators, Canadian General and Aviva and have many fond memories.  Since moving to Woodstock NB I have often thought of Doug.  He will sadly missed.

Our love and deepest sympathy go to Sue, Susan and family members, as we remember the good times we had with Doug. Doug was "cool" before the term was invented. He knew how to put people at ease and make them laugh -- even long-absent cousins. He honed the Hurlbut wit to a science and always had a zinger ready. Just last week I told him I had carried an 18-foot loaf of bread through the streets of St. Petersburg for the opening of the new Dali Museum. Doug replied, "There's another entry for the Hurlbut Book of Records!" Doug's spirit and memories will live forever in my heart. Cousin June (Hurlbut) & Harvey Boudreau, St Pete & Trenton.

Herbie was very proud to have beeen born and raised in Owen Sound and would continually tell people (usually in bars) were it was in terms of Toronto (120 miles north on Georgian Bay) Famous people include Billy Bishop, Harry Lumley and in my mind, Douglas Nathan Hurlbut. I was so sorry first to hear that Doug was sick, and now that he has died.  I will miss Doug at the Jays games.  I always enjoyed his remarks to me as he went down the aisle.

It's hard to believe someone with so much energy and such zest for living has been taken from us so soon.  A great guy, and a marvelous cousin.  I will miss our summer luncheon dates in Toronto, and his (usually amusing) family anecdotes.  Sincerest sympathies to Susan and sister (cousin) Susan.

A great guy and a wonderful hockey player.  I was proud to have played goal with Doug at the Rocklyn tournament.  He was truly one of a kind and will be missed greatly.  Bruce Tannahill, Owen Sound

I played Hockey with Doug for about 5 years on Wednesday nights though the last couple of years I haven't been coming out. It was therefore a shock to hear about Doug. He was quite a character. I used to get into it with him after hockey when we would go out for beers and he would take all the drumsticks out of the chicken wings. When I think of him doing that and of the other funny and quirky things he did a smile comes to my face. I haven't seen or spoken to him in more than 2 years but I will definately miss him. He had a real zest for life that we would all do well to try and emulate.

This was very, very nice of you to set up this website link.  My name is Jennifer Cameron (nee Hurlbut).  I am the younger of 2 daughters of Donald Charles Hurlbut (who also had a son)(who passed away in 1998).  Donald Hurlbut was a brother of Doug's father, Homer.  Unfortunately, I only briefly knew  some of my dad's relatives.  I attended one Hurlbut Family Picnic in Annon? or Leith? (unsure of location) when I was very young but didn't know anyone outside of my immediate family. I don't remember ever meeting Doug but I did visit his parents with my dad on a few occasions when I was very young and they seemed they were very nice, loving people so I'm sure Doug must have been, too. My sincerest condolences go to Doug's family.

As Paul and I are trying to accept the death of Doug we try to focus on some of the best times we've ever had.  We were so lucky that Paul went out to play baseball for the Co-operators and met Doug.  Since I went to most games they made me scorekeeper.  Doug loved to trick me into improving his stats!  Of course the pitchers of beer after the games were the highlight.  We always had a blast at Cabbage Town Festival and Christmas Open House.  Susan's food, especially her sandwiches are legendary! When Doug bought his sailboat he signed us up to crew, not for him of course since I don't remember Doug actually ever sailing, as we set sail he'd be drinking beer on the dock wearing his sea-bands with his feet up on the side of his boat.
