Edward Felix Rodrigues

June 23, 1936April 25, 2021

On Sunday, April 25, 2021, Edward Rodrigues, better known as Eddie, loving husband and father, passed away at the age of 84.

Eddie was born in Nairobi, Kenya on June 23, 1936 to Diego and Annie Rodrigues. He worked as an insurance broker and co-owned a resort in Naivasha. After moving to Toronto in the 1970’s, he became a small business owner and later, was the head bartender at aptly named King Edward Hotel. On February 5th, 1961, he married Monica Rosa and they raised three sons; Darryl, Aaron and Nolan.

From a young age, Eddie was passionate about many things. He was an award-winning athlete, a talented saxophone player, an enthusiastic fisherman and a true champion for Goa. This final passion earned him the nickname “King of Goa”, as he advocated for the interests of the Goan community. He had an infectious sense of humour and was famous for his story-telling skills and offers of hospitality.

Eddie will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his loving wife Monica, his sons Darryl, Nolan and Aaron, his daughters-in-law Lisa and Emma, and his grandchildren Lucas and Maya.

Eddie’s family greatly appreciates the many gestures of sympathy and words of condolences at this very difficult time. Due to the current COVID -19 restrictions, the visitation and services will remain private. For family and friends that are not able to attend due to the restrictions, a portion of the visitation and the funeral service will be live streamed on Thursday, April 29, 2021 starting at 12:45 pm for the visitation with the Funeral Service directly following at 1:00 pm.

I got introduced to my Cousin Eddie in the late 90's. Even though I knew and met most of our family, Eddie, I got to meet much later. The first time we met he said to me " Alex,I am so Happy to see and meet you, I expected a small built guy and here I stand before a Rodrigues in every sense". Made me feel so proud. Eddie always had a way with words . I loved having conversations where we both let out a lot of steam about Goa and how it was vulnerable to the non goans who planned to destroy it's beauty by taking over our lands.
We spoke of family and our roots. He always had real life incidents to speak about.
I always looked forward to his visits to Goa and felt a sense of security knowing there was a Senior Rodrigues around after my Dad and Uncle passed.
My Family and I will miss having Eddie around and pray for his soul.
Heartfelt condolences to Monica and the Family.

I had the opportunity to meet Eddie, for the first time as a client, when, I had the restaurant "The Green Jacket" it was friendship at first sight. After that, He came on my special tour called "A foot in the past" and here we realised, we both had one thing in common; love for Goa and to preserve its culture tradition and natural beauty. whenever we met, our discussion mainly revolved around Goa. It is through him, I learnt first hand and real history of pre and post Liberation of Goa, which is not in history books. He was an angry young man always fighting for justice. Always a Challenger, always a winner. As his age and illness caught up with him, he had to slow down in life reluctantly. His mind, heart and soul was always in Goa, although he lived in Canada. He will be remembered by me as the best Goan from Canada, simply for his love of his roots. There is so much I can say about him. It will cover many pages I have to stop here and say that he will be remember and missed very much here in Goa. I will always cherish the memories of our friendship. Monica, I know, you will be lonely and lost without him; take courage, be strong. You have three sons there and I am here to help you, whenever you come to Goa. ✝️
Aaron,Lisa, Lucas, Maya,Darryl, Nolan and Ema, remember that the ones we love are never gone: they live within our hearts. Thinking of you'll in this difficult times. Please accept sincere condolences from My Family.
Adeus Amigo! May your Soul rest in peace.Amen!

Please accept our heartfelt condolences on the passing of Eddie. He was the one I met on my arrival from Bombay, India in 1955. We were always together and being a musician a lot of thing happened thereafter. It was a shock to me to hear of his passing, as we spoke only a week earlier.

Our friendship goes many years, being a member of my band, we had many good times together. Caring thoughts are with you Monica and your boys, at this time of sorrow.

Deepest sympathy to you all,

Sad to hear about Eddie's passing away.
He was an awesome guy who helped new comers settle in Canada on their arrival when he was with Interconnections Canada. A great bartender as well.
My condolences to his family.
May your soul rest in peace buddy. Amen.

Dear Nolan, Emma & family,

Beatrix and I would like to pass on our deepest condolences to you all.

We know words can only do so much but perhaps they can bring a small amount of comfort and a smile as you remember a cherished memory.

Watching yesterday’s ceremony and reading some of the lovely stories friends and family have shared, we can truly see what a special man Mr. Rodrigues was and how he touched so many peoples’ lives.

Thinking of you all and sending our love,

Beatrix & David

Dearest Monica, Aaron, Nolan and Darryl, I was so sad when this news reached me. Eddie raised strong, caring men that I has so happy to be friends with in my younger days and I still run into Aaron in the ‘hood. Through the service I learned Eddie was a Goa freedom fighter. I married Neil whose similar larger-than-life uncle Alfred Tavares held many similar qualities and also a freedom fighter. We often visit Goa. I raise a glass to Eddie tonight and toast the rich life he led. Jennifer, Neil (Pinto) Ryan, Tyler and Caitlyn - hugs of sympathy from afar

Dearest Aunt Monica, Darryl, Aaron, Lisa, Lucas, Maya, Nolan and Emma,

Our deepest condolences to all of you.

Growing up uncle Eddie was a “second father” to me. I have so many fond memories to look back on. Endless chats and deep conversations that were about his love of life, Goa, music, and positive outlooks on life. I looked forward to spending weekends at the Rodrigues’ home, as the weekends were always good times for me. Some of them were spent watching the old family movies of life in Kenya. Uncle Eddie was alway quick to point out something entertaining, to fill the room with smiles or laughter. I’ll always treasure when Eddie told me that I could do anything that the boys could do. His encouragement made me more confident. I remember Uncle Eddie’s jazz music filling the air with syncopated rhythms while family life swirled all around. The music added to the liveliness, the laughter and joy in Uncle Eddie and the memories I share with my Rodrigues family. Any time I listen to “Take Five” by The Dave Brubeck Quartet, I can recall the joy, laughter, conversations shared with Uncle Eddie and all of you. Uncle Eddie, “King of Goa” keep playing your saxophone, I love you. xo.

With all our love to all of you,
Maria, Terry, Rachel and Julien

My deepest and sincerest condolences for your loss. It is amazing reading all of these wonderful and fantastic memories that Eddie imparted on everyone who knew him. I only met him a few times over the years at Glendon, but his smile and his laugh were so infectious and his way of being was inspirational.
