Fred was a consummate musician and  gentleman. He was generous with his talents and an inspiration to us all. He will be sorely missed. Sincere condolences to Margaret and family.

Freddie was one of my absolute favourite people and musicians. It was a joy and a privilege to know him. The highlight of my week was seeing his warm smile, hearing his amazing, timeless sax and stories at Jim's jam sessions. We will all miss him. Saturdays will never be the same.

It started at Ian's bar. Fred and I were there to rehearse for our two- tenor gig at Bourbon Street. We had a few tastes, a few stories, picked out a few tunes, a few more tastes.
Horns stayed in the cases, gig went perfectly.

I'll miss him as Toronto's jazz culture loses unfortunately yet another of its stalwarts.

I'm so glad I got to know Fred and play with him over the past couple of years. He was a true gentleman and an artist. When he played you knew you were hearing the real deal. We will all miss him.

One moment we would be knocked out by the playing of this musical giant.  Then we would be enjoying one of his amazing stories.  As mentioned so beautifully in the Toronto Star notice, we, his fellow musicians, and his many fans and friends, are "heartbroken but so grateful to have this amazing artist and man in our lives." I am so sad to learn of the passing of Fred. He was a first rate natural musician and an excellent arranger. I had the honour and pleasure of playing with him in the late 50s and again in his rehearsal band in recent years.

I didn't know Fred well but I recall what great fun we all had in Granada many years ago with DT and Fred and many others.  Fred stood out then for me as a gentle man and a great player.  He will be sincerely missed.  And someone well loved and respected by his community.

Nobody swung like Freddy.  He called the perfect tempo for every tune he ever played...and he knew hundreds of the best.  He was one of my favorite saxophonists, and a friend for over fifty years.  To say he'll be missed can't begin to cover it.

I only played with Fred a few times but saw him a bunch of times over the years. He was a kind and soulful player and human being.

I've known Fred since I was a kid studying drums downtown near Lomg & McQuade's in the late 60's . I've had the pleasure  of sharing a bandstand with him many times since then and always enjoyed his great playing and master story telling. Very sorry to hear of Fred's passing as it was announced on Jazz.FM radio. He was a great inspiration to his fellow sax-players. I have memories of admiring his Lead tenor playing in Peter Randell's George Brown College Big Band. My condolences to his family during this sad time.
