Passed away peacefully on August 22, 2023 at the age of 93. Geertje Idsinga was born in Haskerdyken, Netherlands to parents Hendrik and Jantje Idsinga. She grew up in North Holland with her brothers Ids and Jan. The family emigrated to Canada together in 1951 landing first in Quebec then settling in Northern Ontario. Geertje moved to Toronto several years later where she and her brother Ids operated a delicatessen on Gerrard St. E. and she became known to the locals as “Mary”. There she met her future husband Kryn Horstman and married him in 1958. Mary took on the role of homemaker and eventually “mom” to Mark and Carolyn. She lived in Scarborough for much of her life and enjoyed winters in Florida for many years. A long-time member of Knob Hill United Church, Mary asked to be remembered to her friends in the congregation and to her friends and neighbours at Glen Maple. Mary enjoyed nothing more than a game of cards, Bingo or Yahtzee. She eagerly scratched her lottery tickets until the very end. Predeceased by loving husband Kryn and her beloved brothers Ids and Jan, Mary leaves behind her children Mark Horstman (Barbara) and Carolyn Humeniuk, stepchildren Selma, Jan (Loes) and Evelyn (Herman), grandchildren Jennifer (Brian) and Christopher (Lauren), 7 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren and her nieces and nephew, Mariette, Saska, Hank and their families. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Monday, September 11, 2023 at 10:30am at Jerrett Funeral Homes, Scarborough Chapel, 660 Kennedy Rd., Scarborough.
