Dear Megie and family, we couldn't believe the sad news when we heard about your dad's untimely passing. We will remember him for his kindness, delicious meals and amusing stories. May he rest in peace.

Remembering a great family man. We knew Ivan as a very patient, detailed and creative individual who could fix most everything and create almost anything from nothing. He will be missed.

Dearest Megie,  I am in tears after having read your beautiful tribute to your dad.  He is up in heaven now and I'm sure he's so proud and at peace knowing that you and Kalina and your whole family loved him so much and are  courageous and determined to move on and live out his legacy left for you; love, the joy of life, generosity, excitement of a good soup or his rice pudding or a great story or seeing his kids doing well and lovingly bringing up their own families.  How blessed you all are.  And how blessed he was.

If today was a regular Saturday, We would be driving together to ballet classes with you,  sitting and having a tea and talking with the Art teacher about history and politics, and other stuff. perhaps you would have your signature rice pudding to share with everyone, or macaroni na furna. We would then drive back, talk the whole way, and make plans. And later you would call Bulgaria, of course, like you did most days.

But today is no regular Saturday. Today we have to say goodbye, and daddy, we are not ready, we ask why, and we cannot comprehend that you are gone. We wake up every morning and as the realization of what happened settles in, We know the time is coming and we have to say goodbye and let you go. 

So today daddy, We want to celebrate your life. We want to remember you for everything you were.

A loving family man, a great father to the two of us, whose main purpose in life was to help us.

A loving and giving grand father who was always so proud of all your 5 grand children, and helped in raising all of them.

A respected officer in the Bulgarian army, who took your job with pride and dedication,  and who retired as a colonel.

An amazing cook, as you liked to say, chef cook, who took pride and immense pleasure in cooking and whose secret ingredient to all recipes was time and love. And you loved to share your cooking with others and watch them enjoy it.

A hunter and fisherman who loved the sport but did not want to shoot the animals

A car mechanic who loved the smell of machine oil and who loved to spend whole days in the garage lying under the car and who could fix any Russian made car.

A Great story teller, you knew many Bulgarian authors' works by heart and loved to tell them with drama and animation to your companions, 

A great singer of many folklore and old Macedonian songs. 

A good and loyal friend.

You built our cottage in Bulgaria slowly, with lots of love, always planning that it would be for the two of us. Yes, dad, it was hard to be your helpers in all of these construction and renovation projects, year after year, but how we cherish these times now!

You will be remembered for your kindness, generosity, sense of justice. We will remember you for your craftsmanship, ability to make old things work like new... you quickly was discovered by the residents in your building as someone who could fix anything.

You had a hard life daddy, you went through a lot, losing our mom when you were only 45, you raised us on your own in those difficult teen years, and alway put us first. Later you were contemplating how we ended up on two continents. Eventually you came to enjoy your newfound life in Canada, your independence, travelling to Bulgaria for a few months at a time, spending time at the cottage with The family there, and then coming back to Canada, and spending time with the family here and looking for a balance. For you that fragile balance meant that when you were in Bulgaria, you were thinking of Canada. And when you were in Canada, you were thinking of Bulgaria. Always intending and wanting to help us.

We are grateful that you brought all your grand kids to Canada this past summer, and that you spent some unforgettable time with all 5 of them in Cuba, we will always cherish that. We are happy  that you realized your dream of many years. Of course So many dreams have now been cut short, but daddy, we know that you would want for us to find peace, to be strong, and to be happy, because that's what you always wanted, the best for us. One of your dreams was to go back to Bulgaria, you were talking and planning for it... and daddy, we will grant you that wish. 

The time has come. It is time to say good bye. From both of us,  we thank you for everything! We will miss you dearly! 
You will always live in our hearts!

Ivan was a kind and loving man with a big heart who always took care of his family and helped many friends. I will never forget how kind he was to me and Daniel and I will miss speaking Russian to him, enjoying his delicious cooking and listening to his singing! Ivan was a sweet and kind man, the one who will always go extra length to care for everyone he loved and was not afraid to show how much he cared. I will always cherish fond memories of him.
