Janice Elizabeth Hill

Janice (Jan) Elizabeth Hill, called the people she loved ‘Sweetie’, but she was the sweetest person we will ever know.

On August 31, 2022, Jan passed peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Toronto, the same place she was born. She was so loved by her parents, the only child of Ruth and Charles Lusk, born at just 3lbs 11 oz on September 30, 1949. She was so loved by her husband Daniel (Dan) Hill (1949 - 2021) through 49 years of a wonderful marriage and friendship. She was so loved by her daughters, Lorna Hill Thomas and Sarah Hill Jarrett, who couldn’t ask for a more amazing mother, and by her sons-in-laws Chris Thomas and Scot Jarrett. She was the much loved “Nana” of Ruby Jarrett, Zoë Thomas and Paige Thomas, who enjoyed countless dance parties, badminton matches, family dinners and amazing conversations with her. She was so loved by her friends, and extended family, most who loved Jan through 40+ years of friendship.

Jan spent her whole career in health care, first working as a Medical Unit Clerk for many years at Mississauga Hospital, in Psychiatry and later, Obstetrics. After moving to Hamilton, she became a Medical Assistant at King West Medical. She was valued by both patients and colleagues, and she came to be known there as ‘Mama Jan’.

Janice was happiest at home, spending time in her backyard garden with her husband, children, and grandchildren. She also was an avid reader, enjoyed walks and long conversations with those she loved. She will be remembered for her contagious smile, for her endless funny stories, for her ability to turn any space into a dance floor, but most of all for the joy and love she gave and received in life.

Her family wishes to thank the nurses, doctors, and staff at St. Joseph’s for taking such good care of Jan this past week. Jan’s life came full circle at St, Joseph’s, and her family is so thankful for the care she received there at the beginning and end of her life.

Jan’s family were devastated to lose her within a week of learning of her advanced stage colon cancer and would like to remind friends and family of the importance of screening for colon cancer.
