Joan Oakley

February 5, 1922November 4, 2019

The family of Joan Alison Oakley (née Rémy) is saddened by the loss of their dear mother and grandmother on November 4 at Amica Unionville, in her 98th year, Joan is survived by her two daughters, Catherine Tweedy and Rosemary Oakley-Law and her son-in-Law, Hendrik Law. She will be missed by her five grandchildren, Adrienne, Matthew, Rémy, Cameron and Owen. Joan was predeceased in 2013 by her beloved husband Eric Oakley, to whom she was married for almost 60 years.

Joan grew up in North Toronto and attended St. Clements School, then Havergal College. After the war, Joan worked as a medical secretary until she married Eric in 1954. While raising her girls, she became a very active member of St George’s United Church. She was a volunteer for the Women’s Auxiliary and later, the Cancer Clinic at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. Joan was an active community member in North Toronto and often volunteered for the Canadian Cancer Society and Meals on Wheels.

When Eric retired from teaching in 1986, she and Eric enjoyed spending summers in Bobcaygeon, traveling the world, lawn bowling at the Cricket Club and spending time with their grandchildren. She still found time to continue her volunteer work. In recent years, Joan’s declining health required the additional care that Amica Unionville provided lovingly. The family would like to thank all of the staff at Amica Unionville for their compassion and professionalism. A memorial service will be held on November 19, 10:00 am at Eglinton St. George’s United Church, 35 Lytton Blvd., Toronto. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
