My bà nội was one of the most strong-willed and intelligent women I have ever known. She lived with a quiet but undeniable determination, always choosing to face challenges on her own terms. She believed deeply in figuring things out for yourself, and she pushed me to do the same. From her, I learned that strength doesn’t always have to be loud—it can be steady, patient, and rooted in resilience. Her love for her family ran deep and genuine. No matter what was happening, she made sure there was always food on the table and a warm place for anyone who walked through her door. The kitchen was her language of love. With each dish, she reminded us that we were cared for, protected, and always welcomed. The comfort of her cooking is something I will carry with me forever. 

Surrounding all of this was the lively unapologetic soundtrack of her home. You could walk in at any time and hear her Vietnamese music blaring through the house while the TV played the news at full volume. At the same time, she would be on the phone at full blast, chatting away with friends and family, with her voice echoing through the halls. It was chaotic in the most comforting and familiar way—a home filled with sound, energy, and especially, her presence. That mix of music, conversation, and life is something I will always hold close, because it felt like the heartbeat of who she was — even at times when it drove me crazy. 

My bà nội filled every space she touched with warmth, strength, and love. Her lessons, her laughter, her food, and even the noisy, vibrant chaos of her home will stay with me forever. Her smile was absolutely contagious even if she was laughing at my terrible Vietnamese and the fact that I struggled to form and pronounce simple sentences. I am grateful for every memory with her and for the ways she shaped me into who I am today. Every time I would say goodbye to her, she always reminded me of how much she loved and cared for me. I love you so much bà nội.

Growing up, many of my warmest memories are of my bà nội taking care of me. She always made sure I was fed, and the smell of her cooking in the kitchen will stay with me forever. No matter how many dishes she made for the family, my favourite will always be her fried eggs on rice — simple, yet filling, which best represents my relationship with her.

Bà nội was a cornerstone of my life. Every time I visited, I made sure to say hello and goodbye to her. Even if she was asleep, I’d peek into her room, glance at her, and quietly say goodbye before leaving. I’m going to miss that more than I ever realized.

I’ll miss helping her with little things — around the house, on her iPad, or whatever she needed. Those simple tasks slowed me down and taught me to appreciate the small moments. When I was stressed or going through my own struggles, being in the house with her, eating while she cooked, or just spending quiet time together always grounded me. That place of comfort will never feel the same without her.

I’ll even miss her quirks;  how she blasted the volume because of her hearing problems. Sometimes it was loud, especially in the mornings, but now it’s a sound I’d give anything to hear again.

The last time I saw her was on my previous trip to Toronto. She had already fallen asleep, so I didn’t get to speak to her. But as always, I stood quietly in her room, looked at her sleeping, and said a soft goodbye, per usual, thinking I’d see her again.

The house, and especially the kitchen, will always feel lonelier and quieter without you, bà nội. I may never get used to this change. You may not have realized it, but you impacted my life far more than you could ever know, and I will now carry you as I progress live through and play-out the rest of my life. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything. 

You’ll live forever in my heart. A large part of who I am today came from you.

Dear Mom,

I don't know how to begin, because my world feels so different w/o you. Mom, you were the center of my life. I was so attached to you..not just because I am the youngest, your "baby" .. but because you were my softness, my safety, my home. Even at 54, I still felt like your child who needed your voice, your presence, your love.
Thank you, mom for every sacrifice, every gentle touch, every lesson,  every piece of love you gave me. Thank you for shaping the person I have become. Thank you for letting me walk with you until your very last day. It was the hardest thing I've ever done..and the greatest honor of my life. 
Please stay close to me in whatever way you can. I need you, I always will. And I promise I will carry you in my heart until the last day of my life. 
I love you, mom..forever.. and far beyond forever.

🕊️ Obituary – In Loving Memory of Our Beloved Mother

Our Mother’s Name: Ky Thi Le
who peacefully departed on Saturday, November 01, 2025, at Princess Margaret Hospital at 3:15 PM, at the age of 88.

Our mother’s passing has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, relatives, and all who were blessed to know her. Throughout her life, she lived with grace, humility, and boundless love. She devoted herself entirely to her family, always putting others before herself, and nurturing us with her gentle voice, warm smile, and caring hands.

She was our source of strength, our guiding light, and the quiet foundation that held our family together.
Losing her is a loss beyond words.

Although our hearts ache, we find comfort in knowing she is now free from all suffering and reunited with our father in a peaceful, eternal place. We pray that her soul rests in serenity, and that she continues to watch over us—guiding us, protecting us, and reminding us to live with love, kindness, and unity, just as she always wished.

We kindly ask relatives, friends, and loved ones to keep her in their prayers.

đã an nghỉ vào ngày Saturday, November 01/25 at Princess Margaret hospital at 3:15 pm, hưởng thọ 88 tuổi.

Má ra đi nhẹ nhàng, để lại nỗi đau vô bờ bến cho gia đình, người thân và những ai từng được má thương yêu. Cả cuộc đời má sống vì chồng con, luôn hy sinh, nhẫn nhịn và dành trọn tấm lòng cho gia đình. Từ lời nói hiền hậu, nụ cười nhân hậu, đến đôi bàn tay chăm chút từng bữa ăn… tất cả đã trở thành những ký ức không thể nào phai trong trái tim chúng con.

Má là điểm tựa tinh thần, là ngọn đèn ấm soi sáng mọi bước đường của con cháu.
Sự ra đi của má là một mất mát lớn lao mà không lời nào có thể diễn tả.

Dẫu đau lòng, chúng con tin rằng má đã rời khỏi mọi khổ đau thân xác để đoàn tụ cùng ba ở một nơi thật bình an.

Nguyện cầu hương linh má sớm siêu thoát, an vui chốn vĩnh hằng, và tiếp tục phù hộ cho con cháu được mạnh khỏe, sống tốt và thương yêu nhau như điều má hằng mong muốn.

Lá thư cuối gửi Mẹ

Mẹ ơi, con vẫn chưa tin là mình đang viết những dòng này cho mẹ – khi mẹ đã rời xa chúng con mãi mãi. 

Căn nhà giờ trống vắng quá, từng góc nhỏ vẫn còn dấu tay mẹ, từng vật dụng còn hơi ấm, mà mẹ thì đã đi rồi.Cả đời mẹ chỉ biết lo cho chồng con, chưa bao giờ nghĩ đến riêng mình. 

Con nhớ mỗi lần con từ xa trở về, mẹ luôn đón con bằng nụ cười hiền và câu hỏi quen thuộc: “Con đi đường có mệt không?”  Rồi mẹ lại vội vào bếp, nói vọng ra: “Má có làm sẵn mấy món con thích đó.” Lần nào trên mâm cơm cũng có đĩa dưa muối giòn giòn mẹ tự tay làm. Trước khi con về, mẹ luôn ngâm sẵn vài hũ, sợ con về trễ dưa chua quá không ngon. 
Những điều giản dị ấy giờ chỉ còn là ký ức, còn mẹ thì đã đi rồi.
Từ khi ba mất, mẹ là chỗ dựa tinh thần cho chúng con. 

Mỗi lần con thăm, mẹ đều dặn: “Mấy đứa lo cho cuộc sống, đừng lo cho má.” Nhưng con biết, mẹ đã sống cả đời cho người khác, chưa bao giờ cho riêng mình.

Giờ mẹ được nghỉ rồi, phải không mẹ? Ở nơi ấy chắc ba đang chờ, dang tay đón mẹ về sau bao năm xa cách. Con chỉ mong mẹ thanh thản, nhẹ nhàng như làn gió đầu mùa, rời xa mọi lo toan trần thế.

Mẹ ơi, con biết dù mẹ đi xa, tình thương mẹ vẫn còn trong từng hơi thở của chúng con, trong hương dưa muối mẹ từng làm, trong từng nếp nhà thân thuộc. 
Con cứ ngỡ mẹ sẽ còn mãi, nhưng hóa ra chỉ có tình mẹ là vô hạn thôi.

Mẹ ơi… mẹ đi thanh thản nhé, về với ba, về với miền an lành không còn khổ đau. Nếu có thể, thỉnh thoảng mẹ hãy về thăm con trong giấc mơ – để con lại được thấy nụ cười hiền và nghe tiếng mẹ gọi: “Con ơi, má làm sẵn dưa muối rồi, về ăn cho ngon nghen.”
