20 April 1935 Vigo Spain – 4 January 2023 Toronto
With heavy hearts and much love, we mourn Lucy Fernandez who passed away peacefully at St. Michael's Hospital on January 4, 2023 at the age of 87.
Lucy was a beautiful light in the lives of her family and all who knew her. Born and raised in Spain, she met her life-long soulmate, Enrique, while still in grade school and fell in love instantly. Together they set out across the world to explore opportunities in Switzerland and ultimately Canada, learning both French and English during their incredible life journey. Even with the enormous dedication Lucy put towards being a devoted wife, home maker and loving mother, she not only managed to make time to work as a language teacher for the Calgary Board of Education but also owned and managed a Spanish import store, Gallery of Spain. While in Toronto, Lucy managed a luggage store and was bookkeeper for her daughter's graphic design firm. In her later years, she dedicated her time to volunteering and eventually led as coordinator for all volunteers at Belmont House seniors home where she received the Prime Minister's Canada Volunteer Award for her exceptional contributions.
Lucy will be dearly missed by her children Laura (Noah), Marta (Stan), Helena (Paul), Alex (Sharon), D., son-in-law Rick, and her sisters Amapola (Lorenzo), Maria Jesus (Paco) and Fatima (Santos). She will forever warm the hearts of her 12 grandchildren Michael, Maite, Mercedes, Cassidy, Monet, Mauve, Luke, Theresa, Sara, Amanda, Austin, Stephanie and her 3 great-grandchildren. Lucy is pre-deceased by her husband Enrique, parents Miguel Vidal and Elvira Franco, sisters Marisol and Elvira (Anselmo).
A funeral mass for Lucy will be held Wednesday, January 11, 2023 from 1:30 PM to 2:00 PM at Our Lady of Lourdes, 520 Sherbourne St, Toronto. Reception will follow in the church hall.
