Luis was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, and immigrated to Canada in the early 1970s. He met his wife, Grace, in Toronto, who at the time was a single mother trying to make her way in a new country. She had two young boys of her own, whom he adopted and helped raise. Eventually, their family would grow as they settled in Toronto’s Dufferin and St. Clair neighbourhoods.
Luis was a hardworking man who always provided for his loved ones. He attended George Brown College for carpentry and, for a time, applied his craft as a window and door installer. He also drove a transport truck, making deliveries throughout the GTA. When cutbacks ensued, he moved to the factory floor to maintain benefits for his family.
Luis was a regular guy who loved watching sports and sharing his passions with his children. Chicken wings and beer were among his favourite choices while watching a much-anticipated boxing match at one of the local pubs. It was difficult to pry him away from the television when Serie A soccer or the World Cup was on. But his true love was the Jays. He was a die-hard Toronto Blue Jays fan, attending many games and home openers since their early days in ‘77—a tradition he passed on to his children.
Luis is survived by his wife of 45 years, Grace, and his children: Marcelo (through his previous relationship), Manuel, Humberto (late Donna), Heleno (Deborah), and Miguel (Lori). He was predeceased by his beloved son, Anthony. Luis will also be missed by his many grandchildren.
He is survived by his siblings Alfredo, Aracely, Maritza, and Kleber, and was predeceased by his brothers Milton, Walter, and Savino.
The family would like to express deep thanks to the staff at Fairview Manor in Almonte for their compassionate care in his final days.
The sound of his excited cheer will forever resonate in our hearts every time a Blue Jay hits a home run. “Yeah!”
A visitation for Luis will be held Friday, January 10, 2025 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Jerrett Funeral Homes, 1141 St Clair Ave West, Toronto, ON M6E1B1.
