My son Richard and I would like to share a few fond memories. 

       I met Mary Ann in 1967 on 6F at "her" hospital 😁😁 St Mike's. These were some of the best years of my career.  We worked hard, had some good and sad times but got through it all with smiles and laughter and the occasional "wha fi do" . I left 6F in 1973 for Etobicoke General then Peel Memorial Brampton. 

       In 1974 after 9 years between babies Richard was expected. Mary Ann took over, she always said his was the first baby shower she did before the baby was born. He was "Our" baby. At 3 years old Richard, Mary Ann, and I started to do the shows at Ontario Place, O'keef Center, ballet, symphony, Shakespeare in the park, and let's not forget Zamphir 😉. 

       Wow it's been over a year but I  couldn't do this before. We were blest to have known and loved Mary Ann. Grace and blessings to you all and thanks for sharing her.

MaryAnn was a very dear friend of my mother, Anne Fee and myself and our family members.  We have many fond memories of time spent together at work and at play. She has been a guiding force in my career and my personal life. She will be greatly missed.

My professional exposure to MaryAnn covers three phases in obstetrics and gynecology at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. These three phases have a complete and total interaction with Mary Ann. From 1973 to 1976, I was a resident in obstetrics and gynecology at St. Mike’s. The department chief was professor Al Woolever. In 1978 I was appointed a consultant obstetrician gynecologist at St. Mike’s. The department chief was professor Patrick “Paddy” Beirne. Professor Beirne was succeeded as chief by professor Anthony Cecutti. In 1994 I was appointed the obstetrician gynecologist in chief and department head. All of my predecessors were highly regarded clinicians; all had administrative responsibilities for the department and academic responsibilities for the University of Toronto. Everyone recognized the outstanding value MaryAnn brought to the department. 

For the residency program, MaryAnn showed exceptional ability as a senior nurse in obstetrics. She demonstrated exceptional ability in compassionate patient care, possessed superior clinical skills, and wholly imparted her knowledge and wisdom to the residents. By inspecting the carriage of a baby in a pregnant woman at term, MaryAnn proffered opinions of breech pregnancies and the position of the baby’s head as anterior (which is usual) or posterior which can present problems during labor and delivery. These opinions are usually confirmed by the resident or consultant who performed a more thorough internal and invasive examination and / or x-ray. These clinical skills earned MaryAnn high regard by interns, residents, and consultants in obstetrics at St. Mike’s, including all department clinical chiefs. 

In the nursing cedar, MaryAnn’s seniority, high regard by the consultant’s obstetricians, and interpersonal skills were respected. As the department chief, I often utilized these qualities of MaryAnn when resolving disputes between colleagues. Her loyalty to the department was simply exemplary.

She shared liberally, 
She served diligently,
A mentor, coworker and advocate,  
She was the ideal  team player, especially on those night shifts.
Baby Doll, (the name she called me) was always on her team.
Mary Ann holds a special place in my heart; being my nurse and support person during a very challenging scenario at the birth of my son.  And so maybe by Divine orchestration I was the first person to be at her side on the first hours after surgery when she initially became ill.
Her  kind gestures to me, others and her charities are testaments of her gift to and love for humanity .
Wherever she's been, there is a trail of pleasant memories; so very cherished!
May the legacy of Mary Ann and the love she shared, rest in the hearts of family and friends
May God keep her in His rest.

Mary Ann greeted everyone with a beautiful warm smile.  She had a love for her work, "delivering babies" at St. Michael's hospital.  As my colleague she could always be counted on and did her part to create a positive work environment .
I learned a lot and shared a lot with Mary Ann. I have many happy memories.  I will miss her, especially her beautiful smile.

Mary Ann and I met and worked on 6F in 1967 , after I left SMH we stayed  close friends to the  present time.I could not have asked for a more genuine, thoughtful,and caring friend.We enjoyed many laughs,concerts,and trips to Stratford On.,.  for summer shows and picnics. So many happy memories.Mary Ann lived her life to the fullest, " and if we lived  as she did this world would be a brighter place". Now she deserves  her rest.Thanks to her family for sharing her with me.I miss you already Mary Ann-------but as you always say "wah fe du".

I just heard the sad news about Mary Ann passing away. My deepest condolences to her family and friends. Mary Ann was a very special woman and my colleague at St. Michael's Hospital for almost 40 years.  Her memories will live on in the stories of the many mothers and fathers she supported and babies she delivered.  When Mary Ann was your labour and delivery Nurse- you knew you were in the best hands- a calm and professional advocate to keep you and your baby safe. 
As a colleague, she was always there to help and support - a great team member, mentor, and expert with a warm and welcoming attitude.  She mentored colleagues, managers, Nursing Students, Interns, Residents, and MDs. She was the "go to person" for many years and when she retired, she was truly missed. 
Once you knew Mary Ann, she always greeted you as if you were family- she had the ability to make you feel special and loved.  She always made time for a quick chat and update on how her "babies" were doing. 
I will remember Mary Ann always with a smile on her face  even in the face of declining health. And always thanking her doctors and nurses at SMH for keeping her alive! 
God has taken an angel from earth and has her in his loving embrace.


I worked at St Michael's hospital on the labour and delivery, as an agency nurse, in 1991. Mary Ann Alexander was so kind and friendly. She took a liking to me. She told me about an upcoming position and then she put in a good word for me. She has spoiled me ever since.  She was such an amazing labour and delivery nurse. She could predict and anticipate the course of her patient's labour. She would initiate her natural interventions to ensure that mother and baby would get the best outcome. She delivered generations. Love and miss you Mary Ann. Be at peace with Jesus.

Mary Ann was my Aunt, my 'sister' when it suited us, the grandest of Great Aunts and, my friend. I miss her. But, I also know she is with those she loved, looking and caring for us from above, and without pain. May she rest in peace, and may we all find peace in the memories we have of and with her.

Mary Ann became a cherished part of our family on December 9th, 1985. It was the birth of our first child (who we named Alexandra in appreciation!) delivered at St. Michael’s Hospital. Complications and concern set in during the last stages of that slightly-scary experience with Nurse Mary Ann there as a pillar of calm through it all.  We were blessed with three more children over the next twelve years... Mary Ann made sacrifices to be there for the delivery of them all! Her kind, calm and compassionate spirituality will never be forgotten by us, or our children who understood the special bond they shared with her as somewhat of a ‘celebrity’ to our family. We will continue to cherish your memory with love, Mary Ann... God Bless❤️

Mary Ann always had an air of calmness and compassion, and one day, after knowing her for many years, I got to see these characteristics first hand when she stepped in to help my wife, Sharon, during a challenging pregnancy at St. Mike's. Mary Ann brought us both instant comfort. She was a quiet force of nature and she shared this gift selflessly with everyone she met.


Mary Ann was like a big sister to me.
I respected her wonderful knowledge, limitless compassion and amazing ability to bring all her friends, colleagues and acquaintances together in one big family.
I will always have fond memories of Mary Ann.
