Mary Jane Marion Martin (nee Laford) 81, peacefully began her journey to the spirit world on a beautiful sunny Sunday February 8, 2026, after a long illness at St Michael’s Hospital.
Mary Jane will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by her life partner Carlos; her children Chris (Jennifer), Ian (Stephanie), Angel (Joe), Laura (Jay) and Fred (Renée); her siblings Joe (Libby), Linda (Wally), and Francine (Bill); her grandchildren Patricia, Bridgette, Robert, Joseph, Samantha, Dylan and Elliott; great grandchildren Eliana, Eliene and Elias; her children’s father Robert (Joyce) and by a wide circle of relatives and friends.
Predeceased by her parents Joseph and Lucy, her brothers Johnny and Albert, her sister Shirley and her grandson Richard.
Mary Jane “Duffy”, was born in West Bay ON, on the Island of Manitoulin, as the eldest girl of seven children. During her early years, she was often called upon to be the family leader which continued on throughout her life. Mary Jane, an Indian Residential School survivor, was the definition of resiliency. Strength beyond words. Through everything life threw at her she was persistent at getting herself back up, both literally and figuratively. She was an extremely generous and humble woman, giving to family, friends and complete strangers even when she didn't have much for herself. She loved her children beyond what she may have experienced in her own life. She was a warrior.
Mary Jane loved sunshine, get-togethers, good times, her cats and Bingo!
The family would like to extend thanks for the caring and kindness shown to our Mother by the staff and medical teams at St Michael's Hospital including Nephrology, Internal Medicine and MS-ICU. Special thanks to Jessica Demeria in the Indigenous Wellness Centre, and Fr. Yaw Acheampong in Spiritual Care, for their daily visits to our Mother’s bedside.
Family and friends can pay their respects at Rosar-Morrison Funeral Home.
