It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Mee Ngor Ng on Sunday May 24, 2020 at the Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care. Beloved wife of Oi Nam Ng (d. Sept 1997) and mother of seven, she is survived by her five children, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her presence and infectious laughter will be sorely missed.
There is no love like the unconditional love of a grandparent. And “Grandma Ng” especially adored all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Whenever she saw them, she would break out into smiles, so happy that they had come to see her. In her nursing home, where she couldn’t procure any gifts for her visitors, she’d save her fruit and cookies and crackers from her meals, and generously offered them to her family. With a chuckle and a twinkle in her eye, she’d apologize for having nothing else to offer as she insisted you take her tidbits. We learned to graciously accept as she was relentless. In traditional Chinese culture where expression of love was rarely overt, ensuring you did not go hungry was her way of nurturing and demonstrating her love. To her, being settled in life meant having a good job and a significant other; and believing her children and grandchildren are settled in life gave her great joy. She’d always ask whether they are married or have boyfriends. How she’d giggled with pride when her grandchildren teased that they had many who were rich and successful. She fully approved of Justin Trudeau as a suitor when her granddaughters mischievously showed her his picture – she laughed and said he was a good-looking white boy.
Independent until her later years, she’d travel all over the GTA by TTC, sometimes lugging bags of food as intended gifts. She was never afraid to ask strangers for directions, always managing to find where she wanted to go with her very minimal English and on a single ticket. She was such a cute, vivacious little senior lady that people couldn’t help but like her and readily offer her their assistance. She was generous to the core, and was herself always eager and willing to help anybody and everybody. She worked hard all her life and thought nothing of it. To her, being able to work was a privilege and she’d jump at the chance of getting a job, right into her eighties, to the admonishment of her children. And by working at one restaurant job after another, she managed to support her whole family and amass her little nest egg.
During her time on earth, she had touched so many lives. She was and will continue to be respected and loved by all who knew her. This incredible lady will forever be imprinted in our hearts.
Due to the current outbreak of COVID-19, only a private family service will be held for Mee Ngor Ng
