May 25, 1957 – July 16, 2017
Having received a final blessing Philip passed away at St. Michael’s Hospital after a brief illness following a long battle with cancer. Born in Guildford, England, he was the sixth son and eighth child of the late Capt.(N) James Brant Fotheringham and Rosemary Elinor Fotheringham (nee Kirkwood). He is survived by his siblings Thomas, James, Timothy, Mary, Donald, Jonathan, Anne, and Paul, and by many nieces and nephews. As a member of a naval family, Philip grew up in Ontario, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, and Virginia. He graduated from Trent University and worked most of his life in the service industry in Toronto. He loved sailing and introducing others to the sport. Unfortunately, he contracted HIV in the 1980s, a disease to which he lost many dear friends. He never expected to survive till his sixtieth year, but his discipline, love of life, and will to live were strong. Philip was a gentle person blessed with many friends who, along with his family, will miss his open hearted humour, generosity, and many active interests.
Philip's friends Christie Jardine, Brian Dawson and Benoit Friolet are hosting a celebration of his life:
