July 11, 1936 – October 24, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robert Alexander McFarland, who gained his angel wings on October 24, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s.
Born in Sixmilecross, Northern Ireland, Robert lived an extraordinary 89 years, touching the lives of many with his kind heart, sparkling blue eyes, and generous spirit.
Robert was predeceased by his beloved wife, Shirley, his younger brother William, and his parents Alexander and Elizabeth (née Dixon).
He leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish his memory: daughters Leanne (Chris) and Tracey, stepdaughter Elizabeth (Henry), grandchildren Shawna (Chris), Tianna (Ulises), Hope, Elliot, and Joshua, and great-grandchildren Raven and Star. He is also survived by his siblings Sam, Edward, Annie, Margaret, Francis, Emma, and Ruth.
Robert was a proud member of the Loyal Orange Association, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 1/42 Baron Byng, and the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113. He faithfully served Toronto’s transit system, driving the Carlton streetcar for 36 years.
A man of many passions, Robert loved the outdoors—fishing from his little boat, birdwatching, and spending time in nature. He was a skilled craftsman who enjoyed tinkering, quilting, and building birdhouses to attract Blue Jays and other birds. His adventurous spirit took him around the world, from riding camels in Morocco to exploring the sun-soaked streets of Spain, Italy, and Greece. Though he made Canada his home, his heart always remained in Northern Ireland.
Robert was also known for his love of dancing, often found on the dance floor with a joyful smile. He was a devoted friend and family man, always ready to lend a hand or share a laugh. His warmth, humor, and unwavering kindness will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew him.
