It is with profound love and sadness that we announce the passing of Rogelio (Roger) Empensando on July 22, 2025, at the age of 85. Roger was a devoted and loving husband to Maria Bernardita Sevilla Empensando (Maribeth), who passed away on January 8, 2020. Roger and Maribeth were partners in life for over 50 wonderful years. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and resilience.
Roger was a proud and caring father to Mary Joyce and Vanessa and father-in-law to Keith Renaud and Reggie Punsalan. His greatest joy came from being the grandfather of Jessica, Cameron, Xavier, Tristan, Sydney and Cassidy—his face lighting up every time they entered the room. He was also a beloved son, son-in-law, brother, brother-in-law, and cherished friend to so many whose lives he touched with his warmth and kindness.
Born in Mauban, Philippines, Roger spent his early years surrounded by the traditions and beauty of his hometown before bravely immigrating to Canada as a young man in search of new opportunities. It was here that he found not only a home but also love and purpose. He embraced his new life with an open heart—never losing his roots, but always looking forward.
Roger enjoyed travelling on cruises, dancing, playing the piano, and singing with the church choir. People felt welcome with him, they went to him for guidance and leadership. He also enjoyed investing in property and diving into the stock market having an uncanny habit of buying high and selling low.
Professionally, Roger exceeded all of life’s expectations, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He became a Civil and Structural Engineer for the city of Toronto (Building Division, Urban Development Planning) as well as a Private Consultant for those seeking assistance with their commercial developments and complex renovations. He dedicated most of his life to his work. He was deeply proud of what he achieved over a long and fulfilling career, and he remained committed to his craft until his retirement. His dedication and integrity left a lasting impression on the city of Toronto, with credit for many residential, commercial and religious building inspections and designs. With a hand in the Toronto Star Building, the home of the legendary Prince, waterslides at both Wild Water Works and Canada’s Wonderland as well as the stunning Greek Orthodox Church in Markham.
To honour his life, please think of him and appreciate the architectural surroundings in Toronto because with no doubt he has had a hand in most of them.
Our heartfelt thanks go to the many family members and friends who have shown us love and support over the last few days. Your kindness and care have been a true comfort.
