Ron passed away in his sleep, succumbing to the ravages of age and Parkinson's disease at the age of 87. Ron was much loved by Shirley, his wife of 63 years, Deborah and Jim, Scott and Pam, and grandchildren Gregory, Colin, Hayley and Russell. He is fondly remembered by the Cummings and Jost families of Ottawa. Ron was the son of Roma and Douglas Martin and brother of Hugh (all deceased).
Ron was an insurance broker all his working life, first working with the Home Insurance Company, then with his father at Martin Insurance Services, Martin Donaldson Insurance and later with Biggs Evans Phillips and Martin retiring in 1991 for the good life of Lake Muskoka and Florida.
The cottage that Ron built, and rebuilt, became the gathering place for friends and family. He was most happy playing host to the Winetasters and long- time school friends from Lawrence Park, or moving rocks around the property. Last year he was present to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the cottage that Ron built with our long time neighbours and friends.
Florida became a winter refuge where golf kept Ron and Shirley busy along with many social events at Amherst Cove, Naples.
The last few years were challenging but Ron approached these challenges with grace, humor and appreciation for the wonderful care Shirley provided. Over the last year many others came to help him and we are thankful to the staff at Eldercare, Sunnybrook Hospital, and the North York General Hospital Seniors’ Health Centre for the care they provided.
