Ruth was born in Toronto, the first of two children to the late Roy and Anne Schut (née Biggar). She is survived by her beloved brother Brian (Lanna), and her three nephews, Stephen (Stacey), Joseph (Amanda), and Christopher. Ruth was a proud and loving great-aunt to Robert, Jaxson, Ryder, and Bryanna, and a cherished cousin and friend to many.
Ruth grew up in Toronto and enjoyed a long and dedicated career with the Toronto Transit Commission, where she worked for 33 years as a comptometer operator. She retired in 1987 following the passing of her father so she could spend more time with and be a companion to her mother.
Family meant everything to Ruth. She was a constant presence at her nephews' hockey and baseball games and treasured time spent with loved ones during holidays and family vacations to Florida, Myrtle Beach to name a few. Ruthie was an avid traveller going across Canada to different provinces as well as Europe and Caribbean always having her trusted camera or video recorder capturing every memory. She was also instrumental in researching and preserving family history, helping to gather and organize information for the family tree.
Ruth had many hobbies and simple joys that brought her happiness. She loved cheering on the Toronto Blue Jays and the Toronto Maple Leafs, reading, completing crossword and jigsaw puzzles, crocheting, and watching television; especially her favourite soap operas and programs on The Shopping Channel. Ruth was also known for her impressive collection of salt and pepper shakers and miniature teapots.
She had a playful spirit and could often be found enjoying a spirited game of Yahtzee, Skip Bo or Monopoly with family and friends.
Ruth spent her final years at Seven Oaks Long Term Care, where she formed meaningful connections with both residents and staff. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the many caregivers and friends there who made her feel like part of a family.
Ruthie was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Ruth's memory can be made to Covenant House or The Alzheimer Society.
