It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of our mother Shirley Hammond. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. She was born in Badger, Newfoundland on March 22nd, 1934 daughter of Nathaniel and Janet. She moved with her family to Toronto shortly after Newfoundland’s confederation with Canada in 1949. She married her first husband John in 1955 and started a family in the Don Mills suburb, having three sons. During this time she began her career at the bank of Nova Scotia as a teller/cashier, where she made many lifelong friends, and remained there until her retirement. She remarried in 1992 to Doug Hammond, and spent her retirement years primarily in Pickering and enjoyed shopping and traveling to Florida in the winters. Known for her gentle and kind heart, she was a wonderful mother who was always there when we needed her. She also had many friends who cared for her dearly. Her absence leaves an aching void in our hearts, but her spirit lives on in the cherished memories we hold dear.
She was predeceased by her late husband Doug, as well as her siblings Jerry and Marina. She leaves behind her sister Joan, and her sons Steve, Dave and Doug and their father John, as well as her husband’s children Bonnie and Jackie. She also leaves behind her daughter-in-law’s Angelica, Jolanta and Sue, and her grandchildren Tad, Crystal and Robert. As we mourn the loss of her, we find comfort in the countless memories she leaves behind. Her love, kindness, and unwavering devotion to family will forever serve as a guiding light in all that knew her. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A visitation for Shirley will be held Thursday, November 9, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Jerrett Funeral Homes, 660 Kennedy Road, Toronto, ON M1K2B5. A funeral service to follow at 11:00 AM in the chapel. A reception will occur at Jerrett Funeral Home in our Kennedy Lounge.
