Shirley Elizabeth Jones

Shirley Elizabeth Jones (nee Richards) March 23, 1933 - July 25, 2020

We are sad to announce the passing of our wonderful mother, Shirley Elizabeth Jones. She was predeceased by our dear father, Dr. Wentworth W. T. Jones and her brothers Arthur, Robert and James. A lifelong Beach resident and founding member of the Beach Guild of Fine Arts, Shirley was known for her life-affirming paintings of people and places that mattered to her.

Her love has been a constant in the lives of her six children, Laurie (Martin), Sara (David), Susan (Douglas), Heather (Toby), Tom (Jessica) and Lily (Gerard); 18 grandchildren, Claire (Albert), Tony (Sophie), Erik (Sofia) Earle; Patrick (Maila), Shannon (Frank), Melissa Doyle and their father Maurice; Adi, Liam (Alexis), Danielle (Tommy) Underwood; Jasmine, Katarina, Dylan Young; Desmond and Maeve Jones and Kyle Perraton; Raina (Chris), Thalia, Niall Bergasse and great grandson Rein Doyle.

Shirley passed away at home in a sea of love and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Mom inspired us all with the words of the poet Lu Yu:

“The clouds above us join and separate,
The breezes in the courtyard leave and return,
Life is like that, so why not relax?
Who can stop us from celebrating?”

There will be no visitation at this time. Condolences may be left at www.giffenmackdanforth.com

Our heartfelt condolences to Laurie, Sara, Susan, Heather, Tom and Lily. We remember Skip and Shirley's down-to-earth, unpretentious, good-natured view of life and parenting. Shirley had a way of making the most casual conversation light and humorous. We will miss her.
Fondly, Linda and Tom Edwards

To the family and friends of Shirley and Skip Jones,

I was so sorry to hear about Shirley’s passing. She was an outstanding artist, a gracious conversationalist, and a loyal “Beacher.” She was also a valued voice during my time as school trustee, giving me support and advice.
I will miss her smiling face on Queen Street and her steady hand at community events.

Skip slipped away while I was out of town and I didn’t have time to say goodbye. I grew up on Hammersmith, a few doors down the street from the Jones family. We all knew that his name was Wentworth William Thomas Jones, but to us, he was “Skippy” or “Skip” and we all looked up to him. I will always remember being the “nurse” to his “Dr. Jones” in a play we neighbourhood kids put on to support the prisoners of war of World War II. We raised $40! An outstanding amount at that time!

Goodbye, my Dear Friends! I’m sure we’ll meet again at a Beach Reunion in the Great Beyond.

Please accept my sincere sympathy at this sad time.

Shirley Elizabeth Jones., or as she was usually known, Shirley Jones, was the Matriarch of a large Family which settled simultaneously close to the same area as the Hymas Family.
This close co-incidence in 1967 began a friendly association with much interaction through local schools, school contacts and neighborhood politics.
As neighbors, Shirley was invariably helpful and sympathetic, while medical and other solid advice from both husband Skip and Shirley were always quietly and readily available. This friendly association encouraged a truly next-door attitude, with the interest s in the Beach style of living widely complemennted by Shirley's easy, casual and welcoming attitude.
My late wife, Pat, and Shirley shared many life and artistic interests, with Shirley's opinions and good nature being lastingly important to their daily lives.

I have many lovely memories of Shirley, but this one stands out for me. I had a picture of my daughter and her friends basking in the full moon light ready to dive into the water off our dock at the cottage. They were back to us naked!! All of us just finished reading the Ya ya sister book. Shirley asked me for the picture. Well, one week later she unveiled the most magnificent painting of the girls. I was so surprised and it was beautiful. That inspired me to paint and I have been doing it ever since. Thanks Shirley 💗 Lynn

I am sending this on the request of my mom, Margaret Deffett. Margaret extends her condolences to the entire Jones’ family. My mom and dad, Murray Deffett, enjoyed many years with Shirley & Skip and the other parents, attending their kids’ hockey games at Ted Reeve & paddling events for Balmy Beach. My mom recalls the many laughs and cheers as they followed their kids’ teams: my brother Mathew and Tom Jones. My parents loved those years in the early 1980s. My name is Randy Deffett and I too, recall those years and knew Sarah from school. I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to the family.

Dear Joneses,
So sorry to learn of Shirley's passing . My first thought was - She can't do that ! Brought back so many happy times at Kew and Clevlelands House with the Tennis Girls, and of course the Beach Guild. She was very special and John and I will miss her very much.

Dear Laurie, Sara, Susan, Heather, Tom, Lily and family, My heart goes out to each of you at this incredibly sad time. Your amazing mum was always very kind to me and our family. I cherish the memories as a child welcomed into your home for countless hours of play, the many chats over the years and most recently the cups of tea, painting tips and lovely conversation.
Sending much love,
