My sincere condolences to Lisa, Chioma and Eze on the loss of your Mom. 
I’m a younger cousin so my memories are of the stories told by my sister Lynda of the antics she and Susan and Cecile used to get up to.  I think they had a lot of fun times together.  I’m unable to make the funeral on Saturday as I am out of the country.  I will be thinking of you all. Jenny Lou

Following is a memory about Susan, from our Cousin Gwen Cecile Hart.

 Gwen said, "I have a poignant memory of Susan's generosity and happy laugh while staying overnight in Toronto visiting Claudia at sick kid's. She was a blessing to our Mom and family during that time, and it was never forgotten."

Cecile Ayre's memory of Susan brought to mind one I had forgotten (Thanks Cecile).

Susan had been badgering our parents to let her have party/dance out at out camp around 1961 (She was 18) and they agreed. In those day we had a different road to access the camp and there was a large hill, with a curve going down to the camp. Dad set up a big generator, for lights and the record player and Mom made loads of food. The party started off well and everyone was having a ball. Then we heard thunder and saw lighting and the sky opened up with a torrential down pour rarely seen. Then the generator failed and the lights went out, this was in the bush and it was dark as dark gets except for the odd lighting bolt to shed a little light now and then. Everyone packed as best they could in these conditions and first car tried the hill which was a sea of mud and got stuck. My brother Mike (age 15) and myself (age 13) had a ball we were covered in mud pushing cars up the hill and loving it.  The only way to get the cars and pickup trucks up the hill was for about 25 people to push one car at a time. The boys with their suits and girls in there party dresses (1961) remember) were covered in mud. in the end  everyone had fun and Susan's party was the talk of the town all summer GOOD TIMES

In 1967 there was a huge bush fire that was rapidly approaching Chapleau and the entire town was ordered to evacuate . Monica's , Aunt Renee offered her a ride out of town to Blind River where she was going to stay with her sister-in-law Maxie. The problem was Renee already had, Lisa and Susan and Monica had five children (ages 8 month to 9 years). Tim give his new car to Susan to deal with this as he was working on a fire crew and could not leave. This was a time of very high stress as little advance time could be given. Stories were heard of one couple who forgot their child and were ready to leave when they remembered her, another lady packed all her stuff in a garbage bag and then grabbed the garbage by mistake. Monica changed the baby's diaper and forgot the old one on the table. Her husband, Albert was protecting buildings down town, with hoses did not get home for another two days and was welcomed home by the smell. Many hours later they ended up in Blind River where Monica's dad Joe, picked up Monica and her five kids in his big station wagon and they continued to Sudbury. He had made a bed in the back of the station wagon (remember how big these cars were) and Peter 8, Mike 5 and Norman 4 were put on the bed in the car and soon fell asleep. Lise who was 9 sat up front and Monica held Cecile (8 months) on her lap. In all the confusion when they arrived at Blind River Susan side swiped a telephone pole putting a big dent in her brother Tim's new car.  

Susan and I were the same age.  I grew up in the Hudson Valley region of New York.  My Mom would drive up to Chapleau in the 50's.  It seemed like Susan and I and sometimes our cousin, Lynda, would always get into some kind of trouble.  Probably the scariest was when we rowed across McLennan Lake to a boys camp and returned after dark.  We got in big trouble and Susan's Dad didn't make it any easier!  But we had a lot of fun times too.  The last time I saw Susan was at Milton's.  Richard and I drove up to celebrate Thanksgiving with my cousins.  I won't be able to attend the service on March 1st but I do plan to be in Chapleau this summer.    

I'll miss you big sister!  My best memory is you throwing a pound of soft butter at me and missing.  You hit our mother instead and we both were in do-do.  I have no idea what I did to provoke you but  me being a teenager I'm sure there was a good reason.

You will also be well remembered in Chapleau by the group you went to High School with.  You were active with the student council and wrote articles about school activities in the Sudbury Star.  Any time I encounter one of your fellow students they want to know how you are and what you are doing.  So your younger brother Tim - who I'm sure also took pains to annoy you too, but was spared the butter- will organize a memorial service in Chapleau this summer to give them all a chance to say goodbye.

I have many good memories of my sister Susan. We grow up in a wonderful house on the Chapleau River and were woken every morning to sounds of numerous float planes starting their flying day at 6:00 am. She hated to get woken so early day after day, so we made sure she got a room close to the river and would then deal with her to change for a cash exchange. Both Mike and I would hide behind the living room couch and when one of her boyfriends would put his arm around her we would yell surprise and ask for $ 2.00 to leave. if any of Susan's old boyfriends are reading this, it was all Mikes idea.

One time we were at our camp and Susan was staying there with her friend and they had a bear who was trying to get in so she asked us to come out and stay with them as they were afraid. Mike offered to make pasta for supper and when he got the pasta out of the cupboard it was full of mouse droppings so we had to decide what to do. Mike said lets just rinse it off, it is all going to be boiled anyway. It was very good and after they ate it we told them and well it didn't go down too well. Anyway I could go on but I am sure she still loved her little brothers.
