MAYERS, Urcilla Magellan---Dec. 1, 1914 - July 11, 2010. The angels themselves will be after her fried chicken and coconut bread recipe. Sweet Urcie, who made a cluttered world a bit cleaner, who wasted nothing before the word conservation entered the lexicon, who single-handedly raised daughter Esme and great-niece Dinx with the earnings from sweeping uptown floors by day and doling out towels in the downtown Town Tavern by night. Yes, our marvelous Urcie, affectionately known as "Gramps", passed away at Rouge Valley Centenary Hospital in Scarborough midway through her 96th year. Born in Foster Hall, St. Joseph Parish, Barbados, she shipped out to England in 1955 and thence to Canada two years later. Always fiercely independent, she built her life in Toronto upon her firm standards, her boundless love of family and friends, and her bountiful dining table. Beloved mother of Esme Manelva Mayers Walkes, devoted grandmother of Martin Walkes (Cristina Santos-Walkes), great-grandmother "GiGi" to Joseph and Lucas. Second mother to Grecia "Dinx" Mayers (David Kendall). Visitation will be held at Jerrett Funeral Home, 660 Kennedy Rd., Scarborough, on Thursday, July 15 from 6 to 9pm. A funeral service will be held in the chapel on Friday, July 16 at 4pm. Cremation to follow. Interment of cremated remains will take place on Monday, July 19 at 2pm at Pine Hills Cemetery. Family and friends are welcome to meet at the funeral home on Monday for 1:30pm.
In place of flowers, donations to the Arthritis Society or the Canadian Diabetes Association
would be in keeping with Urcie's spirit of giving.
