Velma was one of the most dedicated, efficient and kind people I've ever met.  She had a huge heart.  I know she was very proud of her children (whose drawings lined her office), and husband (whose wonderful concoctions Velma would bring to work for me to taste. It just seems like yesterday that Velma shared her devastation over her father's death. Taken at 52.  So young.  It just seems so unfair but at least it's some comfort to know she's back in her father's arms.  I'm so sorry I just saw news of her passing today  March 17, 2024 otherwise I would have attended her service.  (Judge Patricia Phenix)

Velma, my sister-in-law and affectionately known as Auntie Velma by her nieces and nephews was beautiful both inside and out. Speaking about her in the past tense is painful to me and will take a long time for this to sink in. But the pain felt by her husband and beautiful daughters far surpasses all. Velma, you were a shining light to all who graced your path and will be tremendously missed. But, your Heavenly Father needed you more it seems. I will cherish the beautiful memories we shared forever!!!!!

We mourn the sudden passing of kind, beautiful Velma.
Those she left behind are shaken, sad and bereft at her loss. 
But she is in a better place now. In heaven, surrounded by the angels and close to Jesus. She is free from pain, and the worries of life on earth.

I find myself reflecting on the many wonderful moments I got to have with Velma. I feel lucky to have known such a kind, funny, passionate and inspiring person. Every conversation I ever had with her left me feeling energized and optimistic. Her friendship was something special. 

She only ever wanted the best for everybody. Especially for her family. Talking about Courtney and the girls always brought a smile to her face. You could tell she was bursting with pride and joy. 

Velma always took an interest in the well-being of others and gave the best (honest) advice. She had a big impact on my life. I’m forever grateful to her.

Our deepest condolences from the McRae family, our hearts and prayers go out to your family at this very difficult time. Our daughters attend Holy Name school at the same time. They had the opportunity to grow and flourish together. 
I had the privilege of attending several class trips (fond memories of Pioneer Village), skating at Withrow Park and play dates with Vilma. Vilma had a great sense of humour, always so loving and thoughtful and willing to do drop off and pick ups. Her daughters were her pride and joy, she always talked about how proud she was of them.

My heart goes out to the Handy family during these difficult times.   I am truly heartbroken and sadden that our Velma is no longer with us.    She was a truly special person: kindhearted , smart, sweet, dedicated,  and just an all around amazing human being.  Both her incredible personality and beautiful smile would light up any room.  I had the honour and privilege of working with her at CIC and ISC.   She always had amazing stories to share about her family, especially her two girls; it was clear that they were her pride and joy!  I admired how she lived life, Family First and she somehow managed to be incredibly successful at her career and remarkably found time to provide me with leadership, guidance and most of all, friendship.  I will forever cherish the lessons she taught me and the friendship we shared.    Thank you so much my dear friend, your beautiful soul will live in our hearts forever! Velma had such a huge heart and was a very passionate person. Every time I’d run into her, she would update me on what was happening with you and the girls. I could tell how much she loved you all, as she had stars in her eyes, a huge smile and a special warmth around her. Courtney, you and the girls were her world and anyone could tell how much she loved her family.

I will forever remember the good times we had, there were many.    Velma may no longer be with us physically, but she will always continue to live with us in our hearts. She will be missed by us all.

My condolences to Velma's family, especially her husband and daughters. I'm still in disbelief from this news. It feels like I spoke to her not so long ago, but now realize it's been so much longer than that. When we did last speak, it was a two hour conversation.

I met Velma while at CIC-St. Clair. We would often end up talking several times a week in her cubicle. She would always have something to say that she just had to tell me about something or someone that required her to whisper. She would implore me with her big round eyes and menacing smile, gritted teeth and severe grip on my hand to keep it down and, "don't you dare share this with anyone!" 

She talked incessantly about Courtney and her daughters. I felt like I knew them. I would tell her that she needed to get a life. But, the fact was, that they "were" her life. She was just so very proud of them and loved them so very much. 

Velma had such tremendous energy, emotion and passion. She showed it regularly in the way she spoke and how she carried herself, as well as with her dazzling smile. She was also stubborn and opinionated and we would constantly clash in fun.

Velma was always around to help, to listen, to support and to guide and offer advice. She was a very good friend, colleague and a tremendously loving and caring person. And I will miss her tremendously myself. 

May you rest in peace, my friend. And may your memory only bring happiness, joy and blessings to your family and friends that you have left behind, so suddenly. 

You've once again taught me that harsh life lesson: Never squander a day and put off what you can do now till tomorrow. And when given the chance, always remind those close to you how much they mean to you, as you might not get that chance again.
