We lost our dear mother to Covid-19. A charitable, artistic and savvy woman who raised four children on her own. It wasn't an easy life, but she always found room in her heart to think of our friends as her own. She believed in education, hard work and giving back.
Mom was a woman who often played tennis with our local priest and beat him. She insisted we eat every last bite of our oatmeal at a time when a pound of butter, a Hardy Boy or Nancy Drew Mystery was a treat. She was in the habit of stopping in the dead of winter to pick up stranded mothers and children, drive to tutoring and often turning three sixties, a Player's Plain cigarette hanging from her mouth, but there was nothing plain about Vicki. She packed five kids into a Volkswagen Beetle and drove hours to Expo 67 because she believed in her country.
A nursing home owner, the owner of the Southernmost Motel in Key West, real estate agent and pilot, she still managed to visit those inflicted by aids, donate her time to schools, and become a mentor while still finding the time to sculpt and have her work displayed in local galleries.
We lost our dear mom last night to the pandemic. She will be dearly missed.
