OBITUARY
Rev. William M. Addley S.J.
October 16, 1943 – January 21, 2012
Died peacefully on Saturday, January 21st, 2012 at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, in the 69th year of his life and in the 48th year of religious life. Bill was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on October 16th, 1943 to Gordon Addley and Margaret Tobin. He was educated at Saint Mary’s University High School and Saint Mary’s University (B.A. ‘64) in Halifax. He entered the Jesuit order in Guelph, Ontario in 1964, pronounced vows two years later and studied Philosophy at Mount St. Michael’s Gonzaga University, in Spokane, Washington. He completed a Master’s degree in Sociology at Loyola University in Chicago (1969 – 1971). He was ordained a priest on June 8th, 1974. Immediately after studying Theology at Regis College, Toronto (1971 - 1975) he was appointed Socius (assistant) to the Jesuit Provincial, and was then appointed Provincial himself in 1984. Later he worked in Pickering, Ontario and as Pastor at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Toronto. He was still serving as Pastor when he died. Bill was very gifted, intellectually and personally. He was universally loved, had unfailing good humour, charity and a great sensitivity to the lives and feelings of others. During his years as Pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, his devotion to his parishioners was reciprocated by their devotion to and appreciation of him. He will be sadly missed by his sister Allana Addley-Mont, his niece Tarra Mont-Colgan, and his many friends and colleagues. Visitation will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, 520 Sherbourne Street Toronto, on Thursday, January 26th and Friday, January 27th from 2 – 4 p.m. and 7 - 10 p.m. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish on Saturday, January 28th, 2012 at 9:30 am. A radical word of gratitude for a treasured friend whose greatest gift was that rare art of "disappearing" and in doing so allowing the others to emerge and shine. Thank you Bill for being such an encourager and a soul-friend. philip sj

Poof!... and you were gone! I know that God knows best and that is why He took you the way that he did. So many of us never got a chance to say goodbye. I know that you are resting in God's hands and that you are at peace... smiling that warm welcoming smile, without discomfort and pain. I trust that our Heavenly Father will heal the pain and loss that we feel now that you have gone to Him.
Rest in peace gently, Dear Father Addley.

Dearest Family and Friends, Peace, Love, Joy and Hope of our Newborn and Risen, Lord Jesus.
As Socius 9 Years Assistant Provincial, and 6 Years Provincial, Top Canadian Superior, Fr. Bill Addley SJ paved the way for my 12 year employment at the Jesuit Regis College Library, University of Toronto. He arranged my 25 years in March retirement home here at Rene Goupil Jesuits in Pickering.
He was Superior Here at Rene Goupil for 9 years. We were also together 1 year as Novices, 1 year in Philosophy BA, and 1 year Regency, teaching in St. John's, Newfoundland, and 1 Year Theology Masters of Divinity, at Regis Bayview, University of Toronto. We were together for a week or 2 helping at Good Shepherd Refuge In Toronto.
He arranged mercifully for my discharge after 9 month stay at the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry, now the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. He found me a place to live at Lourdes Parish, and my 12 year Job at Regis Library with Fr. Vince Mackenzie, SJ.
I later moved to 3 Regis small Communities before finding a home here at Rene Goupil Jesuits.
With eight, brief, usually 3-month or less Hospitalizations for Bi-Polar Manic, never Depressed, Episodes, I usually left behind some ruffled feathers, which Fr. Bill Addley SJ, as Friend to All, smoothed well. So I owe to Bill and all of my wonderful Family and all of my Jesuit Friends, and brothers my Forever Love, Fidelity and Gratitude.
So Bill and I and All did our Best. All our Love and Prayers,
.
Fraternally in Christ's Eternal Love, Uncle "George O'Neill", sj

Father Bill,
You were one of the best men that I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Never once did I ever see you without a smile on your face. That happiness that you carried with you always, you made sure was passed on to anyone you met.
We're all better for having known you Father. You will always be in my thoughts and in my heart.

Father Billy,
It is with deep sadness I received from Sr Francis MacDougall the word that Father Billy Addley had died. What an outstanding priest and Jesuit. Billy was one of the finest students I ever had the privilege of teaching. He stood out scholastically, athletically, spiritually, and socially. He was a born leader, well liked by all his peers and teachers alike. He entered grade 9 at St. Mary's in Halifax in 1957 with the reputation of having been chosen that summer as the most gentlemanly baseball player in the whole Halifax minor baseball league. That description applied to him for life. It was the best news one could receive to hear he was entering the Jesuits. His leadership qualities were quickly discovered there as he spent practically his whole Jesuit priestly life in a superiors role. On the human side, I'll miss those few trips to Toronto to be picked up and rushed to see our favourite Blue Jays. The invitation, until now, was always open. I, like his fellow Jesuits, say farewell to an outstanding priest and a friend. I'll be praying to him and not for him. A long and grateful friend, Elmer MacGillivray.

Dear Allana and family, Our deepest sympathy is the sudden loss of Fr. Bill S.J. We so enjoyed having him in our family through the years, when he would vacation with my brother, Fr. Larry Gillick S.J. His humor and gift of joy were contagious, and we will miss him-terribly. He would share about his own family, and it was clear he loved all of you, deeply. May God hold Fr. Bill in the palm of His hand.
Love, Mary Ann Gillick O'Neil and Jerry O'Neil

Father Bill, thanks for all your help at Our Lady of Lourdes School.
January 25, 2012
My sincere condolences to Bill's sister and neice and all of his Jesuit "brothers". Bill and I were contemporaries at St. Mary's University where he was both well liked and highly regarded both as a student and a genuinely kind person. We met again only once since our university days, at Father Pedro Arrupe house in Toronto where my brother, Father Jack Hall, S.J. resides. That was at Christmas time 2010. How much changed for Bill in such a short time thereafter! I remember him kindly.

January 23, 2012
Dear Father Bill,
On the morning of Saturday, January 21, 2012, I woke up to find my parents standing side by side in the kitchen quietly. This was very unusual. Considering that we were rushing for our Saturday morning classes, quietness is not a normal routine for this time of the day. As I sat down to eat my breakfast, my mom told me that you have passed away, and tears started to roll down the cheeks of my mom. My dad headed to the study room and was there for a while. We were all crying! I was taken aback by this, because it seemed too soon. I also wasn't able to send you the second half of my story which I promised to send you. I will still do it because I promised that I will finish it. But, where would I send it to? I'll probably keep it in a safe place for you, as this was meant to be just for you and me.
When I was little, about 2-3 years old, you would talk to me after mass. You would bend down, so that I wouldn't have to look up just to talk to you because I was too small. You would sit facing me at “Donut Time” after mass and I remember asking you couple of times, “Is your name Father Bill,” and you would smile and say, ”You're right Gillian!” I think that was when I was trying to memorize the names of the numerous priests at Our Lady of Lourdes.
I also remember when you used to call me a “Little Angel”, because of a funny and innocent act that I did at one Christmas Eve mass. I was dressed up like a little angel by Sr. Anne, and as people sang the “Holy, Holy”, I thought it was time for a party, so I stood up in front of the Altar and began dancing with the song. I was sitting with the other angels, so, I guess my mom wasn't able to stop me on time. From that time on, you would say, “You're a real angel Gillian”. But, oh, by the way, sorry for the Mass interruption!
Up to this time, I feel so proud acting as your “executive secretary” at the Church play when I was about 4 years old. You said I was good as your name echoed at the church when I said your name loud and clear at the play. People were laughing but I didn't mind.
You were also a big part of my dad's life. To what I understand, you were just like a father to him. You might not believe it that when the conversation is about Toronto; your name is always in the line. My dad would say the same phrase over and over, “I could never forget how good and thoughtful Fr. Bill is as long as I live”. I started to wonder and finally asked why? My dad said that, if it's not because of Fr. Bill I am not where I am now. As I am growing, I could see how you influenced and inspired my dad a lot. When friends from Toronto come and see us, my mom and dad would always ask, “How's Our Lady of Lourdes? How's Fr. Bill?” And more questions will follow after that, then, we would prepare smoked salmon for you. I know you enjoyed them a lot.
Before we left Toronto, you gave us a very special blessing. I realized now as I am growing that being a pastor of a big community is not easy. For sure you had a very hectic schedule, but you made us feel so special by making time to be at our “Farewell Party”. We promised to come back. I think your blessings to us did work because I ended up not wanting to leave BC, but Toronto remains our home sweet home because of our family at Our Lady of Lourdes.
I could write more but I don't think there would be an ending to it if I'll write them all. This is just a few of the many beautiful memories that my family and I have of you. You touched so many people's lives, and we are only one of the many.
My sister, Larisse, doesn't really remember you, but she has you in her thoughts and prayers. You could also see the sadness on her face that morning, although she would ask from time to time, “Who is Fr. Bill again?”
Thank you Father Bill, for the love and care you've shown for me, my family, and for the whole community at Our Lady of Lourdes. I don't know if this is going to be read at your funeral service, but if it is, I just wanted the world to know how much me and my family loved you and we always will. You are embedded in our hearts forever. We are not saying “goodbye”, for we know we will meet again someday. We will miss you!
Your “Little Angel”,

So many wonderful tributes will be given, and many remarkable memories will be shared. God
loaned us one of His priceless ones to teach us how to live, love and share in the heart of Jesus here on earth. Blessed is the journey we made with Bill and to have been the recipients of a large share of His heart and of Bill's. Thank you, Bill, for your example.
