After his heart surgery and strokes, David's greatest desire was to be able to maintain an independent life in his own condo. Because his sister Gail had set up a network of splendid caregivers for him, her brother David was able to be where he wanted to be -- at home, with some of his favourite caregivers, and not in a nursing home or a palliative care hospital unit -- for which his family is exceedingly grateful.
David is survived by his sister Gail Ganetakos (née Armstrong) and her husband George; his nephew Marc Ganetakos; his niece Alexandra Ganetakos Johnston, her husband Charles Johnston and son Max; his nephew Joseph Ganetakos, his wife Mary Walsh and son Jack; his sister-in-law Penelope Ganetakos; his stepsister Jule Ryder and her sons Michael Miller and Peter Miller; and his stepsister Pat Deacon and her son Stephen Deacon.
The family wishes to publicly thank the superb team of caregivers provided by Eldercare Home Health under the direction of Yannique Salabie and her boss Lisa Wiseman, whose diligence made David’s life at home possible. They also wish to acknowledge the teams at Scarborough Grace Hospital, Toronto Rehab, Canterbury Place and North York General Hospital for all their fine efforts on David’s behalf.
As David's mother died a few months after he was born, he was raised by his father’s second wife, Clare Armstrong Filkin, with whom he lived until she died in 2005. In keeping with his wishes, David’s ashes will be buried at a future date alongside the remains of his father, Harold Grover Armstrong, his mother, Mildred Armstrong, and his brother Eugene Armstrong, in the Armstrong family plot at Park Lawn Cemetery in Toronto.
