

Passed away on Sunday, February 27th, 2011 after a long illness. He was the cherished husband of Shirley MacLaren Hayhurst for 63 years and father and father-in-law of Laurie and Alan Cruess, Gordon Hayhurst and Jackie Hushion, Alice Hayhurst, and Daniel and Michele Hayhurst. Wonderful grandfather of Gordon (Anne Lefever), Stephanie (Graeme Goodall), Susie, and Bill Cruess; Dominique, Charlie and Adam Hart; Blake and Steele Currey; and Reilly, Emily, Nicholas and Abigail Hayhurst. Dear brother of the late Grace Lanctot and Dea Crompton and brother-in-law of the late Doris Turner (Bob) and Robert MacLaren.
Bill was born in Minburn, Alberta on May 8, 1925 to William Hayhurst and Edna Mattern. He attended Queen’s University, graduating with the gold medal in electrical engineering. After obtaining a Master of Science degree from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California and teaching in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of British Columbia, he read law at Osgoode Hall where he was awarded the gold medal on graduation.
He practiced law at Ridout Maybee in Toronto for 40 years, specializing in intellectual property. He became Senior Partner and was counsel to the firm in retirement. While practicing, for 21 years he taught the courses on intellectual property in the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto.
He was past president and honorary member of the Patent and Trademark Institute of Canada and past president and life member of the Canadian Group of the International Association for the Protection of Industrial Property. The family wishes to thank the staff of Greenview Lodge for the loving, excellent care Bill received under the direction of Jill Raine. At Bill’s request there will be a private service.
