Born on December 26, 1950 in Kidapawan, Philippines, Angelita was the sixth of seven children of Cipriano Beredo Sr. and Enriqueta Santos Beredo. A high achieving student, Angelita graduated as the valedictorian of Central Mindanao College class of 1966, earned her pre-medical bachelor’s degree from Ateneo de Davao University in 1970 with Summa Cum Laude honors, and achieved her Doctor of Medicine Degree in 1974 from the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery.
Angelita immigrated to the United States in 1977, completing her general practice residency at St. John Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, before moving to New Jersey for her internal medicine residency at Jersey Shore Medical Center. There she met her husband-to-be, Simeon “Sam” Canullas Jr. in Neptune, New Jersey in 1979. She then completed two endocrinology research fellowships in Brooklyn, NY and moved to Southern California in 1983 for a third endocrinology fellowship at UCLA. She opened her private practice in Inglewood, California in 1984 where she was beloved by the patients she served and respected by her colleagues for her calm, compassionate care.
Angelita and Sam were married on November 3, 1983, and together they built a home filled with love, warmth, and laughter. Her adventurous spirit led the family to travel to various destinations for vacations and pilgrimages over the years. She became a devoted member of Saint James Catholic Church in Redondo Beach, where she later served as a lector, and continued to grow deeper in her faith with every passing day. Most importantly, despite the demands of her medical practice, she always prioritized every milestone of her whole family: performances, competitions, cotillions, graduations, PCNs, weddings, and family reunions. She loved to be surrounded by family, and her gentle, loving presence will be missed dearly.
Angelita was preceded in death by her parents, Cipriano Beredo Sr. and Enriqueta Beredo. She is survived by her husband, Sam, her children Sean and Sharleen, her brothers Rodolfo, Cipriano Jr., and Manuel, her sisters Carmelita, Ofelia, and Evelyn, and her three beloved grandchildren.
