I’m Ross Papilla, the oldest of the seven children of Angelo Q. Papilla and Leonida P. Papilla. 

Our dad was a living example of virtue. He didn’t speak much but  his actions depicted values such as hard work, sacrifice, self-discipline, integrity, generosity, love, and faith in people and in the Almighty. He lived to a productive, healthy and happy age of 100. When asked what’s his secret to a long and healthy life, he says it’s moderation. And he lived a life of moderation in everything, avoiding extremes and excesses. 

My dad was born in  Pasima, Malasiqui, Pangasinan, Philippines, where through a great deal of adversity, he became the principal teacher for over 20 years. His hard work and self-discipline was so inspiring that all the teachers and students in his school excelled in their tasks resulting to a number one ranking among the schools in that time. He was a good teacher and excelled in many other  fields such as construction, agriculture, business, etc. 

After retiring early, he immigrated to the US and worked in the electronics and communications industry. At Hughes Aircraft, he worked for 10 years with zero time off.  Always serving as a quiet example, his family thrived and grew into 45 children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and in-laws, all in the US.  After retirement, he continued working,  giving back to people in the Philippines. He constructed structures for the school, the community, and the church. He helped so many people in having a livelihood and giving their children a good education.

My dad was productive, still driving and at age 95  and was constantly learning new things. Last January, he went with us on vacation to the Philippines, and he wanted to stay longer because to older people like him it’s more fun in the Philippines. He celebrated his 100th birthday there, happy and healthy until he got sick. 

We are so thankful to God for giving us such a loving and inspiring dad.
